2021 Nursing Training Admissions suspended

The academic schedule for the 2021/2022 academic year has been postponed until further notice by the Ministry of Health. This was said in a statement released by the Chief Director, Mr. Kwabena Boadu Opoku-Afari, on Thursday. The Covid-19 epidemic, according to the ministry, was the catalyst for this last-minute decision.

“I write to inform you to suspend the implementation of the 2021/2022 academic calendar. This is to allow continuing students to complete the 2020/2021 academic work and also enable the final year students prepare for the Nursing and Midwifery Council Examination in December 2021”

“The need for social distancing and compliance to all covid-19 protocols requires that before the commencement of the 2021/2022 academic year, the final year students would have vacated the school premises. That will create space for the first-year students when they report”.

Last year, the president, using an executive instrument, shut down schools and universities at a time when Covid-19 was at its peak. Applicants to nursing and midwifery schools were advised to postpone their applications till further notice. They were finally accepted in January 2020, just in time to start the calendar.

The academic calendar was not expected to be disrupted this year because all schools and institutions were open for business. Applicants who had gone through an interview and were awaiting acceptance letters have been left in the lurch. Administrators of nursing and midwifery institutions are likewise left in the dark since the news came too late.

In fact, the news arrived just as several institutions were beginning to send out admission letters to successful applicants.
Despite the fact that the letter does not specify when the academic calendar will begin, precedent indicates to January 2022 because final-year students will take their licensing exam in December this year. Some sections of the public think the announcement may be due to the lack of space and facilities to admit the next batch and not necessarily the COVID-19.

It is unclear whether the Ministry of Education would issue a similar instruction to Ghanaian institutions of education. Ghanaeducation.org will keep track of any developments and inform readers as soon as possible.

The ministry of health has published a statement, which may be seen below.
