Ghana Police Clarify Decision on OccupyJulorbiHouse II Demonstrations.
The Ghana Police Service has provided clarification on its decision to advise against the second edition of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration by the Democracy Hub, initially scheduled to take place from December 1 to December 31, 2023.
The police revealed in responses to OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters that they received two other demonstration requests for the same period and venue, the Jubilee House. Doris Appiah Larbi of the Patriotic Hub and Kwame Baffoe Abronye of the Patriotic Forum for Accountable Governance submitted similar notices to demonstrate in support of the government.

In a statement released on November 17, 2023, the police explained that due to the security implications of having three simultaneous demonstrations at the same venue which is the OccupyJulorbiHouse II, they engaged with the organizers to propose rescheduling their protests after January 5, 2023.

Despite the police’s advice, the organizers of the OccupyJulorbiHouse did not agree, prompting the service to seek legal guidance by filing an application at the High Court on November 15, 2023 against Ghana Pollice. The application aims to prohibit the holding of the special events and has been scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.

The police reassured the public and OccupyJulorbiHouse Protesters of their commitment to upholding democratic freedoms and providing necessary security for individuals and groups exercising their constitutional right to protest safely and peacefully. They emphasized that their actions are in accordance with the laws governing protests and expressed their dedication to maintaining public safety during such events.
