Akufo-Addo freezes pay increment for Presidency and all Ministers

President President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo freezes pay increment for Presidency and all Ministers.

The President disclosed that he will not enjoy an increase in his pay for 2021. He has also indicated that his appointees will also have pay increments frozen. This was announced in his 2021 May Day address to fellow Ghanaians on Saturday as Ghana marked workers Day.

This is the first time Nana Addo freezes pay increment for the Presidency and all Ministers. During Covid-19, he gave up his salary for three months as his contribution toward the covid-19 fight.

The no salary increment is expected to affect the President, Vice-President, all Ministers, and Deputy Ministers, the President said.

This is aimed at reducing outflows from the public purse that goes to pay salaries and allowances of political appointees.

“I have decided to freeze salary increment for this year, 2021 for myself as a President, the Vice-President, Ministers, Deputy Minister and all appointees of the Executive, ” Nana Addo stated.

Earlier this year, a Technical Adviser at the Finance Ministry made an infamous statement that the government was not going to increase salaries for public sector workers until 2024 because the country was broke.

In a related development the Former President, John Dramani Mahama has advised the government not to burden Ghanaians workers with new taxes among others. In his May Day address, he said I salute the suffering workers of Ghana

Ghana is going through tough times however, NAGRAT has called on the government for an increase in salaries of teachers between 15%-20% as Ghana marked May Day.
