The 2021 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will start on Monday, 15th November, and end on Friday 19th November 2021. According to statistics made available by the Ghana Education Service 571,894 candidates are expected to sit for WAEC administered Junior High School Leaving Examination.
Candidates who excel in the examination would be placed in various second-cycle schools of their choice across the country in 2022.
Ghanaeducation.org can confirm that 2020 a total of 531,705 candidates, made up of 269,419 males and 262,286 females wrote the examination is less than the 2021 candidates who are expected to start their examination on Monday. The 2021 candidates totaling 571,894 is an increase over the 2020 edition. A total of 40,189 more candidates are writing the examination in 2021 compared to 2020. This translates into a 7.55% increase in the 2020 candidates.
The increased number means more Demand for the Free SHS and that may translate into increased pressure on facilities at the various secondary schools should more candidates excel in the examination.
Already the government has introduced Free SHS to ensure increased access to secondary education.
The government’s completion and addition of new second-cycle institutions will create additional space in both traditional and STEM secondary schools to ensure there is enough space for all candidates who pass their examinations.
The construction of the J.A Kufuor Senior High Technical School, the Creative Arts Senior High School, and the Bosomtwe Girls’ Senior High School, all in the Ashanti Region and others will be broad on board according to the government.
The J.A Kufuor Senior High Technical School, located at Dabaa in the Atwima Nwabiagya North district, will serve as a model Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) school.
Plans are in the pipeline for the construction of thirty-five (35) more such model schools around the country.
