Important public education institutions have been established and mandated to perform varied functions to achieve national educational objectives. Ghana’s education sector is key to the development of the manpower of the nation.

The Ministry of Education
The Ministry of Education in Ghana is the mother ministry in charge of education matters in Ghana. It is headed by the Minister of Education. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is the current Minister of Education.
The ministry plays multiple roles on behalf of the government as it governs educational activities and management of education in Ghana. It is also in charge of issues bordering curriculum, Ghana Education Service, and other state institutions in education. The Civil Service Law 327 and under the PNDC Law 1993 brought the Ministry into existence. The ministry is required to provide a relevant quality education environment for both public and private educations institutions and bodies to function. It works with both local and foreign stakeholders, such as the National Accreditation Board (NAB) and Ghana National Commission For UNESCO.

Ghana Education Service
Education in Ghana at the Pre-Tertiary level is championed by the Ghana Education Service in Partnership with the Ministry of Education.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC)
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) in the biggest and most recognized examining body in West Africa as it operates in five member states thus: (Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia)
It organizes examinations at all levels, but the most popular examinations are the WASSCE and BECE for secondary schools and basic school levels.

FREE SHS Secretariat
With the coming of the Free SHS introduced by President Nana Addo and his government, the state established the secretariat to oversee the effective implementation of the new policy in education at the senior high level. Per the Free SHS, parents are not to pay fees for the secondary education of their children. The government provides essential services and resources to schools. The Free SHS also led to the removal of cut-off points for admission into Senior Secondary School in Ghana. The program has produced its first batch of graduates whose results were released by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) on 13th November 2020.

National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA)
National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) is another key education-focused institution in Ghana. It was established after the 2007 education reforms. The objective of its existence is for it to champion the management and implementation of Curriculum Policies of the Ministry of Education in Ghana to help achieve the government’s education-focused objectives.
An Act of Parliament led to its reconstitution in 2008 and had its first set of Council members inaugurated in 2011. In 2015, the then Minister of Education and now running mate of the National Democratic congress Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang inaugurated the second Council. The current council of NaCCA was constituted by the current Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
