John Agyekum Kuffour, His public and political life

John Agyekum Kuffour was born on 8th December,1938 at Daaban near Kumasi in the Ashanti region of Ghana.Kuffour attended Government Boy’s Primary and Middle School, Kumasi from 1945-1953. In 1954,he became a student of Prempeh College, Kumasi.
Kuffour proceeded to the Oxford University from 1949-1961 for further studies in law.
From 1965-1967, he entered into private Law Practice in Kumasi. Kuffour bacame the chief Legal Officer of Kumasi City Council between 1969-69. John Agyekum Kuffour was a member of the 1969 constitution that ushered the country into the second Republic.
He won the Atwima Nwabiagya Parliamentary Seat in Ashanti region in 1969.From 1973-1978,he was the Board Chairman of Ashanti Bricks and construction company Limited as well as Cojak Company Limited.

He became a member of the constituent Assembly that drafted the 1979 constitution that ushered into the Third Republic . Kuffour was a member of parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya on the ticket of Popular Front Party (P.F.P), and became the deputy spokesman for Popular Front Party on Foreign affairs.
In the year 1982, John Agyekum Kuffour was named as the Secretary of Local Government under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) administration but he fell out due to differences in aims and objectives. Kuffour bacame the board chairman of the Asante Kotoko Football club from 1988-1991.
He won the New Patriotic Party( N.P.P) primaries in 1966 and was the leader of the Great Alliance of NPP and CPP that contested the General Elections in the same year but they lost to the incumbent President Flt.Lt. Jerry John Rawlings.
He was re-elected as New Patriotic Party flag bearer for the 2000 General Elections.
Kuffour won the election in 2000 against Professor John Evans Atta Mills of the National Democratic Congress.
On January 7,2001 Kuffour was sworn in as the second president of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. He later became the Chairman of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 2003 and 2004 respectively.
He was re-elected president for the second time on 7th December,2004.
John Agyekum Kuffour married to Mrs. Theresah Kuffour of blessed memory with five children.
