UNICEF Ghana has called on all to support the fight against child labour to ensure every child caught in this old-fashioned web and mindset is set free.
Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations has indicated that, “Nobody can escape from the fight against child labour, it’s our collective responsibility.”
Currently statistics in shows Ghana has 2.5 million child labourers. Out of this huge number, some 1.2 million of them work in abusive and exploitative conditions.
The global pandemic (COVID-19) caused many children to stay home and out of school which further made it worse.
2021 has been set aside as the year for the elimination of child labour. To #ENDChildLabour, we need to fulfil children’s rights to an identity, quality health and education. Let’s also strengthen social protection services for families so that children are not forced to earn a living to meet their basic needs.
For every girl and boy, protection #ForEveryChild, every right.
The need to fight against child labour took centre stage during the “Sing Along With Us Against Child Labour” Concert organized by the European Union in Ghana.
The children were found to have experienced significant trauma, which posed a threat to their healing and restoration process.
UNICEF also supported the International Justice Mission to provide counselling and therapy sessions, which helped the children to process their symptoms of trauma.
