ON AUGUST 29,1969,PROGRESS PARTY WINS ELECTIONS TO FORM GOVERNMENT OF THE 2ND REPUBLIC
On August 29, 1969 the Progress Party (PP) led by Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia won 105 out of 140 seats in the first National Assembly of the 2nd Rebublic of Ghana. The Progress Party won 59% of the vote, defeating the National Alliance of Liberals (29 seats) led by Komla Gbedemah, former finance minister in Nkrumah’s government.
This elections held when the administration of Nkrumah has been outskirt by the National Liberation Council (NLC) in 1966.
Dr.Kofi Abrefa Busia became utilize the opportunity given to him as District Commissioner and also member of the Constitutional review committee when the NLC lifted the ban on politics
While in office as Prime Minster, he had half a million Nigerians deported from Ghana for failing to comply with the immigration laws of the country in 1969.
Dr.Busia gave great importance to agriculture development with policies to improve and modernise the sector, through scientific and technological innovations from Israel and other sources. Dr Busia tied in his approach to agriculture, with a good policy of management and sustaining Ghana forestry and introduced the Rosewood tree, which still endures, into Ghana on plantation basis to provide posts for rural electrification, housing
Also Dr.Busia Started a great policy of improving and extending quality secondary school education through the district level Model School; each of which was to be of the standard and quality of Achimota School. But for his short 2 and half years in office, this dream would have been achieved in his first five year term.
Kofi Abrefa Busia, He was the Prime Minister of Ghana from 1969 to 1972. He helped to restore civilian government to the country following military rule. While he was in Britain for a medical check-up, the army under Ignatius Acheampong overthrew his government on January 13, 1972.
