Q1. What are the ways by which we can minimize accidents in the workshop/food laboratory? Give any five

* Never ignore safety procedures and always follow instructions.
* Avoid excessive haste and rushing through work
* Do not use faulty equipment.
* Clean any wet and slippery floor.
* Properly arrange of equipment and tools.
* Good lightening and ventilation,
* Work systematically and carefully.
* Paying maximum attention to whatever you are doing.
* When lifting, bend your knees.

 

Q2. Differentiate between Thermoplastic and Thermosetting Plastics

Egs. polyester resin, phenol formaldehyde, melamine

formaldehyde, Urea formaldehyde

Difference

Thermoplastic Thermosetting
*  Cut clearly.

*  Become flexible at 2000C or less.

*  Melt to a viscous liquid if heating continuous.

*  Can be reshaped or remelted.

*  Cannot undergo chemical change.

*  Does not become permanent hard

*  Bent to different shape.

*  Become stiff solid again when cooled.

*  Produce powdery chips when cut

*  Bubble.

*  Decompose before softening.

*  Cannot be reshaped.

*  Undergo chemical change.

*  Become permanently hard.

*  Rigid molecule structure.

Q3. Differentiate between Ferrous Metals and Non-Ferrous Metals.

Ferrous metals

Ferrous metals are metals made mainly of iron with small amounts of other metals or other element added, to give the required properties. Almost all ferrous metals can be picked up with a magnet and therefore rust due to the present of iron if the surface is not well protected. Examples are; pig iron, wrought iron, cast iron, and steel.

Non-Ferrous metal

They are metals which do not rust because they do not contain iron. Examples are copper, lead, tin, aluminium etc.

Difference between ferrous and non ferrous metal

Ferrous Metals contain iron but Non Ferrous metals do not contain iron.

Ferrous Metals Rust while Non Ferrous Metals Do not Rust

Ferrous Metals can be picked up with a magnet but non Ferrous Metals cannot pick be picked up with a metal.

 

Q4. Explain the term Ceramics. Give the difference between Modern and Traditional Ceramics

The word ceramics is derived from the Greek word “keramos” which means ‘potter’s clay’.

Modern Ceramics – can be defined as the compounds of metals and non- metals. They generally have ionic atomic bonding between them.

Traditional ceramics – include insulating materials, glass, refractories, abrasives and enamels. They include metal oxides, carbides, borides, nitrides and silicates.

Q4 B. Give examples of ceramics

Earthenware, Porcelain, Silicon carbide, Zinc oxide, Zirconium dioxide, Titanium carbide, Silicon nitride, Ferrite, Lead zirconate titanate, Magnesium diboride, Sialon (Silicon Aluminum Oxynitride)

Q4 C. State four Advantages of ceramics

  • They are very hard
  • They have high melting point which makes them excellent refractory
  • Good thermal

  • Low mass density which results in lightweight
