In a harrowing turn of events, a school building collapse in the Upper West Akim District of the Eastern region has left eight individuals fighting for their lives.
Among the victims are four basic school pupils and a teacher, who now teeter on the edge of critical condition. The incident unfolded tragically amidst the Domeabra Zonal Inter School Sports event on Wednesday.
Reports indicate that the calamity struck as attendees sought refuge from the weather. Seeking shelter in the dilapidated structure of the Sukrung Awemfi D/A primary grounds, the unsuspecting victims found themselves in the grip of a disaster.

In a desperate bid for survival, bystanders sprang into action, pulling the wounded from the rubble and rushing them to the Adeiso District Hospital for urgent medical intervention. Among the casualties are three community members who had come to spectate the tournament, their lives now hanging precariously in the balance.
The gravity of the situation has prompted outcry from officials and community leaders. John Priestly Badu, the Zonal Vice Chairman, lamented the persistent neglect of the school’s infrastructure despite repeated appeals to local authorities. “We have written severally to the MP and DCE to fix that school, but we haven’t had a favourable response. It is a serious situation,” he expressed, echoing the frustrations of many.
In the wake of the tragedy, solidarity and support have emerged as vital pillars of hope. Gyasehene Edward Kotey and Mbrantihene Edem Atiemo, esteemed community leaders, have rallied to the aid of the afflicted, offering solace and reassurance during these trying times.
