Another Earth Tremor Hit Parts Of Accra

This morning, parts of the capital city of Accra experienced a 2.8 magnitude earth tremor, the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) has confirmed in a press release.

According to report, the said earth tremor had a magnitude of 2.8 on a richter scale and was slightly felt in High Street, Ridge and some other parts of Accra Central around 9:49 am on Friday, 10th March, 2023.

Below is the full statement from the ministry.

“On Friday 10″ March 2023, an earth tremor event occurred at 09:49am in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

The event had a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale. The epicenter is located 1.Skm offshore near James Town in Greater Accra Region.

The recorded magnitude is indicative of the extent of the tremor. The earth tremor is minor one and so it is not expected to cause damage.

The tremor was slightly felt in High Street, Ridge and some other parts of Accra Central. These are natural occurrences and therefore difficult to predict. The Authority is committed to continuously monitoring these events and informing the public appropriately to ensure public safety and minimize risk.

Education and sensitization of the public on awareness and response during earth
tremors is important and currently being undertaken by the Authority.

The public is urged to remain calm and go about their normal activities.”

It could be recalled that on 12th December, 2022, parts of Accra were also hit by two earth tremors. The first tremor was recorded a little after 10 am while the second tremor was recorded around 11: 30 am on Monday, December 12, 2022.

Some of the places that recorded the tremor included Adabraka, Gbawe, McCarthy hill, Kwabenya and Mallam.

The Principal Seismologist at the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA), Nicholas Opoku urged Ghanaians not to be worried about the latest earth tremor.

He, however, said citizens in Accra must be prepared to experience such tremors from time to time since the region finds itself in an earthquake zone.

“This is not a new thing we have been experiencing this from time to time…even the most recent ones were in 2018, 2019 and 2020. What we have been saying all this while is that Accra is situated in the earthquake-prone zones so from time to we will be experiencing these minor earthquakes until such a time that a major will happen,” Mr Opoku said.
