UPSA Master Class 2024: Vice-Chancellor imparts essential life skills to final year students
At the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof Abednego Okoe Amartey, the Vice-Chancellor, has offered vital guidance to final-year students, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing personal development as they transition into the professional world.
His advice came during the annual Undergraduate Master Class, a program designed to prepare students for the complexities of life after academia by equipping them with essential life skills.
During his address, Prof Amartey stressed the significance of continuous improvement and lifelong learning for aspiring professionals.
He advised students to focus on building a compelling “life CV,” which encompasses not just academic achievements but also the cultivation of personal skills, experiences, and exposure.
“Your academic qualifications form the foundation of your life CV, vital to both your personal and professional growth,” Prof Amartey explained.
He illustrated his point with a relatable example, stating, “This is why a waakye seller with a degree is more likely to succeed in business than one without any qualification.”
Prof Amartey further encouraged students to take full advantage of the resources and support available at UPSA to create a robust life CV that truly reflects their unique talents and aspirations.
He highlighted the importance of gaining experience through internships, volunteer work, and involvement in extracurricular activities, all of which add invaluable depth to one’s professional profile.
“I urge you to actively seek opportunities to apply your knowledge in real-world settings, which will hone your skills and expand your horizons,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor also touched on the importance of exposure, referring to the breadth of experiences that broaden students’ perspectives and cultural awareness.
Whether through travel, cultural exchanges, or campus initiatives, exposing oneself to various environments is crucial. “Exposure fosters a well-rounded individual capable of thriving in diverse settings,” he noted.

Supporting Prof Amartey’s message, Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Studies, Prof Emmanuel Selase Asamoah, remarked that the Vice-Chancellor’s advocacy for a life CV paradigm marks a significant milestone in UPSA’s commitment to holistic student development.
This approach aims to empower graduates to excel not only academically but also professionally and personally as they embark on their post-university journey.
Further emphasizing the importance of continued education, the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Prof Samuel Antwi, encouraged the students to aspire to greater heights by pursuing further studies.
He announced that UPSA has introduced several market-driven postgraduate programs designed to foster professional and personal development.
