The call follows the rejection of GES’s directive to the Wesley Girls High School leadership to permit Muslim students to partake in the ongoing Ramadan fast which was turned down.
The Africa Education Watch is calling of the powers that be at the Education Ministry to “Draw lines before SHSs become ungovernable” and also ensure they set approved standards for the effective governance of second cycle schools in the country.
The Education Policy Research and Advocacy Organization said the governance systems in senior high schools have become weak and unstructured. It said the systems in place need an overhaul as soon as possible to “draw the lines before our SHSs become ungovernable.”
That “unilateral directive” has since been rejected by the leadership of the Methodist Church Ghana.
The church is defending its position argued that their decision “is a long-standing one which is also non-religious and various Muslim ladies in Ghana have passed through the school adhering to such a rule.”
“The policies of the School over the 186 years of its existence have resulted in Wesley Girls High School being the school of choice, excellence and achievement and the Church remains in full support of these policies,” it stated in a release.
The Africa Education Watch which is not excited about current happenings shared its opinion on the matter in a Twitter post on Tuesday.
It called on the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to intervene and find lasting solutions to prevent future occurrences.
