#1. Be Precise in Your Answers, Straight To The Point but not too short.

To SCORE High Marks in BECE and WASSCE Examinations, provide precise answers which are free from unnecessary information but don’t make it too short to lose marks.

These means do not write answers that are extremely short or overly long for questions. Let us take a BECE social studies question such as the one below to demonstrate.

Give four importance of water bodies to the economy of Ghana or State four importance of water bodies to the economy of Ghana.

If a student goes writing answers such as

a. It provides employment

b. It is a source of protein

c. Water for use at home

d. We travel on it

In fact, the above answers are not good enough for such a question and although you will be marked correct, if it is a 10 mark question, you will not score anything above 4 marks. You see, you will be doing yourself more harm by writing such very short answers.

Instead, produce complete answers with examples if available as indicated before.

a. Water bodies serve as a source of employment for fishermen and fishmongers which earns them income to take care of their families.

b. The fish caught from these rivers such as Tilapia serves as protein in the diet of people It.

c. Water from water bodies such as rivers is used for domestic house chores such as washing and for cooling machines in industries.

d. With the help of boats and canoes, water bodies like River Volta serve as a means of transportation from the south to the northern part of Ghana.

a. Explanation of the key concept or issues eg. Rivers, name a few examples and indicate that they are useful to humans in many ways.

Every country has water bodies depending on where it is located. Ghana as a country located along the gulf of guinea has several rivers which pick their source from mountainous areas and flow into the sea to complete their course. Some of these rivers which are very useful gifts of nature are River Pra, River Volta, and River Bia.

Rivers in Ghana continue to play important roles in the development of the country and the lives of those who live far and near them. Some of these important or benefits we derive from rivers are explained below.

The above can be a simple but excellent introduction to such an essay question. Since it is an essay question, you need to explain the main points one after the other and support them with solid examples or scenarios.

Start each new point with a linking word or conjunction. Examples are First of all, Also, Furthermore, Again, It is important to say that, It is equally important to say that,..

Each of these should be followed by a comma before you raise the new point.

It is now clear that state questions in say RME, Social Studies, and other subjects are not to answer anyhow. To score high marks in your examination, follow the above suggestions and improve on them.

In answering questions in the way suggested, be prices and write in a good manner. Check your punctuation, write the right information, and do not beat about the push by providing irrelevant information that does not add anything to your answer.

#2. Use The Right Formulas And Units In Mathematics, and all subjects that require them.

To SCORE High Marks in BECE and WASSCE Examinations, master the relevant formulas and units of measurement.

This is an important suggestion which you cannot ignore. If you are answering questions in a Science subject, mathematics, technical subject, etc which have units of measurement, it will be dangerous to provide an accurate answer in the examination without providing the unit of measurement.

To pass these subjects, do not forget to use the right formula. Do your best to know the formula before you enter the examination hall. This is achievable if you prepare very well ahead of the examination. You can memorize the formulae and get used to their application correctly several weeks before the examination. Get a notebook for these formulas and study them along with other text for the respective subjects.

#3. Time yourself, test yourself

Students who are not able to answer the required number of questions in the examination hall are often affected by their inability to complete providing all the answers within the time allocated. One way to avoid this is to train yourself to do that. Take past questions and try to answer the questions within the allocated examination time. If the paper is a 2-hour paper, try to solve the required number of questions from the past paper in 2 hours. After doing this for a while solving other questions by giving yourself less time or double the questions you are to solve and maintain the 2 hours. This practice will ensure that you train yourself. Not knowing the answers required can also lead to the wasting of time in the examination hall and lead to you not being able to completely answer the questions required of you. To score high marks in your exam, learn to improve your speed and accuracy while answering questions in trial tests, end-of-term examinations, and mocks. You can also allocate time to each question and ensure once the time allocated is due, you move to the next question.

#4. Plan your answers and set time aside for reading through

It is wrong to take your pen and start writing without planning your essay. To do so, read the questions and choose the ones you can answer. Plan by jotting down your answer skeletons. When answering the questions start with the ones you can answer very well. As you answer you can be thinking of how to solve the others. You do not need to answer the questions the way they have been arranged by the examiner. For instance, if the question you are answering is Q1. and it has a, b, c, and d but you can answer c, d, a, and b part of it in that other, go ahead and answer them like that but ensure that you number them well.

Again if you have decided to answer questions 1, 3, and 5 you do not need to answer them in that other. If your best question is question 5, answer it first before you answer your next best question.

#5. Read through your answers

Reading through your final answer before submitting the scripts is another way to do well if you want to SCORE High Marks in BECE and WASSCE Examinations.

Most students write answers without taking the opportunity to read through. Reading through will help identify mistakes and incomplete answers. You can correct your wrong grammar, spelling mistakes, and omission in the answers you write if you read through. To pass your examination, do your best to allocate time for reading through your answers. For instance, if section B or the essay section of the examination is a 2-hour paper and you are to answer 4 questions, allocate 2 minutes to answering each question, ten minutes to plan your answers, and five minutes for reading through to make corrections.

#6. Obey the examination rules and do not go challenging it or the invigilator

To write the correct answers and excel, the rules of the examination can be of help. Each section of the question paper also has detailed but clear instructions. Read them and follow them in providing your answers. If the instruction says attempt or answers four questions, do your best to answer the required number even if you are not able to answer your final question, write the question number and start something.

WAEC exam rules are not there to decorate your paper but It is very sad that most students don’t even care to read the WAEC exam rules and regulations before and after the exams. It is recommended that you keep to the rules in order to successfully sit for all your papers without any issue with the invigilators and/or the examiners.

#7.  Study, Study & Study

Passing the BECE or WASSCE demands that you study diligently. create a personal timetable, be disciplined and sit to learn, and practice with past papers. Make Be a friend to all the good students in your class or school and get help from them. Learn from them and with them, learn and teach others as you also learn from them. Also, ask them questions if you are not clear about anything.

#8. Improve Writing Skills

Your handwriting needs to be clear and readable hence put in an extra effort to write in such a way that others can read. Bad and very difficult-to-read writing can hide all the correct answers you write for an examiner. In fact, poor handwritings are irritating to examiners and it makes it difficult for them to assess you. Do well to improve your writing by writing eligible enough for the markers to see what you’ve written.  if you are a brilliant student or even an average student and your handwriting is bad, you can be in trouble. This is very important because many students are academically sound but they still fail because of poor handwriting. Take your time and improve on your writing.
