Massive Demonstration To Hit Government On February 13 – See Details

Organized Labour plans a nationwide demonstration on February 13, 2024, to protest the government’s imposition of a 15% VAT on electricity consumption.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) Chairman, Dr. Yaw Baah, declared during a press conference on February 2 that they will not compromise on this matter and emphasized their refusal to negotiate on the VAT issue. The demonstration is set to take place in all regional capitals.

Dr. Baah stated that a committee has been appointed to oversee the demonstration, and the decision to protest stems from the government’s failure to address their demands made during a previous news conference on January 23. At that conference, the TUC had requested the government to withdraw the tax, expressing concern that it disproportionately affects the poor, including pensioners.

Despite the government not scheduling any meetings with Organized Labour, Dr. Baah announced their intention to petition the Ghana Police Service on Monday ahead of the nationwide demonstration. The labour union is adamant about their stance, demanding the withdrawal of the VAT on electricity consumption and giving the government until January 31, 2024, to comply.
