New GES Code of Conduct for Students in SHS (Download here)

The Ghana Education Service has achieved another great feat by introducing the Code of Conduct for Students in SHS, known as the Code of Conduct for Students in the Pre-Tertiary Levels of Education in the GES.

The code covers issues such as acceptable conduct, what constitutes misconduct, flouting lawful authority, absence from school, attendance at all school assemblies, and school or class attendance.

Other rules in the code of conduct for students border on student loitering, academic work, examinations, and their related malpractices, breaking bounds and punctuality; improper dressing; un-prescribed items; and willful damage to school properties.

The rest are sexual offences, physical and psychological violence, causing harm, religious practices, causing harm, incitement to riot, gambling, possession and circulation of adult content, records, weapons, and other offenses. The compressive GES Code of Conduct for Students is more tailored towards improving student behaviour and discipline, especially in secondary schools where discipline has been on the downward decline for many years.

Students are required to demonstrate courtesy and respect towards everyone. They are to respect the elders of society as Ghanaian customs demands.

They are to internalize and exhibit gentleness, good manners and observe standard values of life.

Students are also required to respect the rights of individuals and be law-abiding.

Students are also to perform all their responsibilities in the school, including personal hygiene and cleanliness of the surroundings and maintain diligence at all times.

According to the student’s code of conduct, students who report to school late from approved breaks would be deemed to have misconducted themselves if they fail to provide valid reasons for their last arrival back to school.

A student is also deemed to have misconducted himself or herself if there is no formal communication from his or her guardians to the school on the matter.
