Nsein SHS named Kwame Nkrumah Senior High School, Nsein

The Board and Management of Nsein Senior High School (SHS), along with the Nsein Traditional Council and the Old Students Association, have officially renamed the school after Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The school is now called Kwame Nkrumah Senior High School, Nsein.

Anthony Eiwuley, a former Board Chairman and alumnus, announced that this decision honors the legacy of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. This is a significant milestone for the community.

At a press conference in Accra, Mr. Eiwuley shared that the official renaming ceremony will take place on September 21, which would have been Dr. Nkrumah’s 105th birthday. With this change, the school will be the second in Ghana named after the first president.

The school was originally named after Dr. Nkrumah, who established it. However, following the coup on February 24, 1966, its name was changed to Axim Secondary School. The traditional council then renamed it to Nsein Secondary School because it is located in Nsein, after a legal dispute from 1967 to 1970.

During the 60th anniversary celebration in November 2022, the paramount chief, Nana Agyefi Kwame, announced his support for restoring the original name. This led to the school’s board of governors approving the renaming.

Mr. Eiwuley expressed hope that the new name will inspire future students to embrace the values of self-reliance and excellence that Dr. Nkrumah championed.

Nsein Senior High School being named Kwame Nkrumah Senior High School is to honor Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President and a prominent figure in the country’s independence movement. Nkrumah is celebrated for his significant contributions to Ghana’s liberation from colonial rule and his efforts to promote education, industrialization, and pan-Africanism. Naming the school after him serves as a tribute to his legacy and aims to inspire students by reminding them of his vision and dedication to the development of Ghana and Africa. It symbolizes a commitment to uphold the values of freedom, unity, and progress that Nkrumah championed.
