Regional Minister reprimands South Tongu DCE over locked relief items

In a recent development that has stirred public outcry, the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, has sternly reprimanded the South Tongu District Chief Executive (DCE), Seth Agbi, for his controversial decision to lock up relief items meant for victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage. This incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability.
The controversy unfolded as essential aid destined for the affected communities remained stranded at the District Assembly, reportedly due to a lack of fuel for distribution. Dr. Letsa, speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, expressed his disappointment in the DCE’s actions, emphasizing that such negligence was unacceptable.
“I reprimanded him,” stated Mr. Letsa, addressing the issue on the public platform. He went on to highlight the gravity of the situation, hinting at potential further disciplinary measures. “I am in discussions with the appointing authorities to see what next happens, whether a warning or something else,” he continued, indicating the seriousness of the matter.
The DCE’s decision to withhold the relief items triggered public outrage, with demands for his dismissal echoing across various quarters. The incident raised questions about the accountability and effectiveness of local authorities in responding to emergencies.

Responding to the growing controversy, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) intervened to take over the distribution of the relief items. Collins Avornu, the NADMO director for South Tongu, clarified that the organization had been actively distributing relief items for the past three weeks since the Akosombo Dam spillage.
However, Avornu dismissed claims that the DCE’s video led to the initiation of relief item distribution, asserting that NADMO had been engaged in the distribution efforts well before the public outcry. This clarification aimed to address concerns and provide context to the sequence of events.
As the controversy unfolds, discussions about the efficacy of local disaster response mechanisms and the accountability of public officials have taken center stage. The reprimand from the Volta Regional Minister serves as a pivotal moment, signaling potential repercussions for officials who fail in their duty to promptly address and alleviate the suffering of disaster-affected communities.
