Strongest Warning From GES to 2022 BECE & WASSCE Candidates

The Ghana Education Service has sent the strongest warning to all 2022 BECE & WASSCE candidates ahead of the WAEC-administered examinations.

According to the GES, it has received complaints from schools at the JHS and SHS levels that final-year students who have been registered for their respective examinations have become truants.

In a letter dated 9th June 2022, GES gave the strongest warning to the 2022 BECE & WASSCE candidates and stated four punitive actions, it wants schools, WAEC, and other stakeholders to take to deal with the canker.

“Management of the Ghana Education Service has reliably been informed that some Junior High School and Senior High School form three (JHS3 and SHS3) students consistently refuse to attend school and classes after registering for their Basic Certificate Education Examination (BECE) and West African Senior High School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)” The letter indicated.

GES furthered that, it was not enthused about the behaviour of the students and described it as misconduct. Such students according to information available to the GES are also engaged in drugs, bullying, wearing unprescribed attire, use of mobile phones while in school, and totally disregarding all school rules and regulations.

Strong punishment prescribed by the GES for such students

To restore order, ensure compliance with school rules, and also deal with student truancy, the GES has directed school authorities at all levels, and WAEC to do the following.

READ: How parents help students fail or pass BECE or WASSCE Examination

  1. Parents whose wards are involved in such unacceptable conduct should be contacted and informed of the sanctions to be applied to such students.
  2. Students who are found guilty and are in boarding houses would be deboardinized.
  3. Such students should write the examination under police escort or the escort of their parents.
  4. WAEC would not admit such candidates into the examination halls and centres during the examination.
  5. School authorities are to report all criminal activities of students to the police and other security agencies for action.

Where such students are being investigated for any of the issues of misconduct, they shall take part in the BECE or WASSCE under the supervision of a police escort while students who have disciplinary issues will have to get their parents to escort them to the examination centre.

It is hoped that candidates will fall in line and do what is expected of them, parents will have to continue to talk to their wards, while school authorities offer their professional services and the needed leadership to get candidates ready for the upcoming examinations in August and Ocotber 2022.
