In a striking revelation that sheds light on the challenging conditions under which teachers operate in Ghana, King Ali Awudu, President of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), has spoken out about the hard conditions facing teachers in the country.

With a career spanning 19 years and holding a second degree, Awudu himself earns a monthly salary of GHS4,066, a figure that highlights the financial struggles faced by those in the teaching profession.

This disclosure came during a candid conversation with TV3’s Keminni Amanor, where Awudu didn’t just talk about salaries but also delved into the politicization of the education sector.

He lamented that the sector is exploited for political gains more than any other in Ghana, a practice he firmly believes must come to an end.

The consequence of such politicization, he noted, is a stifling atmosphere where headteachers, burdened by the fear of dismissal, find themselves unable to express their frustrations and concerns openly.

Despite these challenges, Awudu took a moment to celebrate the high standard of teaching professionals in Ghana, describing the quality of teachers the country produces as “top-notch.”

This acknowledgment serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of Ghanaian teachers who, despite operating under less-than-ideal conditions, continue to uphold a standard of excellence in education.

Awudu’s remarks are a call to action for those in power to reconsider the conditions under which teachers work.

The issues of inadequate compensation, political interference, and the lack of a safe space for open dialogue are not just concerns for teachers but for the entire nation.

As educators play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the country, it becomes imperative to address these challenges to ensure that the educational sector can thrive, free from political manipulation and financial constraints.
