The success of any BECE candidate or any student writing an exam is not in only learning the right materials the right way, but also in mastering the question-answering skills for each subject and applying them in the exam hall.

How To Pass Any Exams (Mastering Question Answering Skills)

One of the biggest challenges of candidates is answering questions very well. To achieve success in any examination consider the following suggested tips  in the exam hall. Practice with them several times before the exam.

  1. Read each question more than once. Do not be in a rush to answer a question until you really understand the demands of the question.
  2. Read each question/statement carefully. It can be useful to reframe the sentence to interpret what is being asked.
  3. Understand the keywords in each question.
  4. Write answers clearly and in simple sentences without unnecessary big words and the use of jargons, unless they are needed to explain the point.
  5. Support your answers with examples to convince the examiner that you know what you are explaining.
  6. In English comprehension, never give more than one synonym for a word. If you do this and one of the words is wrong, you will lose the full mark allocated.
  7. Choose questions you can answer very well, and also make sure you answer your best questions first.
  8. For each of the questions you chose, carefully analyse the wording of the topics you have chosen.  Make sure you understand what you have to do so that your responses are relevant to the question.
  9. Plan answers before you start writing them. Use about five minutes to plan and identify the points you want to explain. It is best to write these points on your question paper clearly for each question so that you do not forget. Also write the examples you want to use if they come to mind.
  10. Think of your introduction, body and conclusion for essay questions in Social Studies, RME, English Language and others.
  11. Go through your answers to correct errors such as spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and answers missing keywords.
  12. If you are getting confused, check the question again to make sure you are not deviating. This also helps you to check if you have covered all aspects in your essay or question.
