HRRG and JRF Call for Recognition and Accuracy in Parliamentary Statement on 13-Year-Old Ama’s Case.
In a recent development, the Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) and the Justice Revived Foundation (JRF) have issued a strong press release in response to a parliamentary statement by Hon. Xavier Sosu regarding the harrowing gang-defilement case of Ama, a 13-year-old pupil.
The two organisations have commended Hon. Sosu for his efforts to draw national attention to this tragic case on the floor of Parliament. As a respected human rights lawyer and activist, his advocacy has been critical in pushing Ama’s story into the public domain and mobilising support for her justice.
However, HRRG and JRF have expressed deep disappointment over the omission of their significant contributions to the case. According to the press release, these organisations have played pivotal roles in investigating and publicising Ama’s ordeal. Their independent investigations, grounded in Ama’s personal testimony, revealed that more than 20 individuals, led by one Clement Kwame, were involved in this horrific act.
The organisations are particularly concerned about certain details in Hon. Sosu’s statement that, according to them, rely heavily on a police report without cross-verifying with civil society organisations. HRRG and JRF argue that depending solely on police accounts, especially in sensitive human rights cases, can undermine the truth and risk perpetuating misinformation.
“A mere police report, without independent verification, is insufficient to establish the full truth in a case of such critical human rights implications,” they stated.
In their statement, HRRG and JRF emphasized that dismissing or overlooking the painstaking work done by civil society groups not only erodes public trust but also undermines the collective effort needed to secure justice for Ama and other vulnerable children.
The organizations have called on Hon. Sosu to:
Acknowledge the critical contributions of HRRG and JRF in advocating for Ama’s justice and amplifying her voice.
Exercise caution in presenting unverified information as fact, particularly when it concerns sensitive human rights issues, and engage with civil society organizations to ensure accuracy.
Continue supporting Ama’s case, by advocating for the arrest of all perpetrators, including Clement Kwame, and by pushing for comprehensive legal and psychological support for Ama.
HRRG and JRF reaffirm their unwavering commitment to working collaboratively with all stakeholders, including Hon. Sosu, to ensure justice is served. They call on all Ghanaians to unite in the fight against sexual violence and to safeguard the rights and dignity of every child.
At Ghana Education News, we echo this call for unity, accuracy, and respect for the tireless work of civil society organisations dedicated to protecting Ghana’s children. Together, we can help build a society where every child is safe, heard, and given the chance to thrive.
