Ghana Education News latest update is on the “Amend GNAT Constitution Now” campaign which aggrieved GNAT members have commenced against the current voting rules, the constitution, and its leadership.
A huge section of the members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is calling for the amendment of the constitution of the teacher union to allow all members to vote at the national level among others.
The call to change the constitution of GNAT for the benefit of all GNAT members has been embraced by many members across the nation.
Members of GNAT calling for the constitution to be changed have argued that only 4% of the union’s membership vote on national issues.
The call is for the constitution to be altered to give equal rights to all qualified members to vote at the national level on all issues confronting the association.
According to the members, representative voting has outlived its importance. It is time for and One GNAT member One Vote which will be more democratic and elections or voting on matters of national interest by members of GNAT will help ensure that the views of all members are given equal space.
A press release copied to Ghanaeducation.org indicates a group calling itself General Voting Advocates in GNAT (GVAG) is championing the campaign.
(GVAG) is of the view that, the use of delegates for decision-making cannot be continued by GNAT. It believes the change will ensure the leadership of the union is accountable and to help reduce the perceived manipulation, corruption, and the mismanagement of the union and its resources among others.

The (GVAG) has disclosed that it would start a nationwide petition signing by members to solicit support for the Amend GNAT Constitution Now campaign nationwide.
The group has indicated that they cannot comprehend how 1000 members vote for 250,000 members thus (1000/250,000) x 100% = 0.004 or 0.4% members.
