Government overhauls CSSPS to ensure meritocracy, transparency

The government has announced that, they are completely building the Computer School Selection and Placement Systems (CSSPS). Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, who is the Minister of Education, disclosed that, this was to make sure that things are fair, open and based on what you actually do- not who you know and where you come from.

Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, who is the Minister of Education stated that ‎“But much of it, we should all admit, is problems created by all of us. In many instances, we have seen registration of unqualified Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) students. You can imagine somebody in Primary Six, Form One or Form Two being encouraged by their parent to write BECE.”

During a press briefing in Accra within the course of the week, he drew to attention that ‎“All these are not acceptable under our GES practices, and any student or parent caught will be dealt with decisively. ‎The students must go through the full course of Primary School to Junior High School 3 before writing BECE. We will strictly enforce the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and GES standards on this matter.

‎Mr. Haruna Iddrisu made it clear that, the government would bring back the local admission rule in the process of BECE student placement at the secondary level through the Computer School Selection and Placement Systems (CSSPS).

‎The Minister of Education, ‎Mr. Haruna Iddrisu said that the opportunity that comes with the local preference policy would be improved in the coming days especially with the opportunities that were given to the community, leaders of the community and persons within that community to have access to secondary education.

The Education Minister directed Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to help students begin the process of deciding on school choice, “but that process is not to be completed until the results are finally announced and determined”.

‎As per Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, there was a situation in the past where students chose their preferred schools without knowing their aggregate level, and that affected the placement system.

The Minister further announced that “This time, we will give a mandatory period of one week after the results have been declared for students to confirm on the basis of their performance in the BECE what their first choices are.”
