The Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery, also known as the Green Card Lottery, is a program administered by the United States government through the Department of State. It aims to diversify the immigrant population in the United States by offering a chance for individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to apply for permanent residency, or a Green Card, through a random selection process.

The DV Lottery program typically opens for entries once a year for a limited period, usually in the fall, and applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements to participate. These requirements include being a native of a qualifying country (a country with low rates of immigration to the U.S.), having at least a high school education or two years of work experience in a qualifying occupation, and meeting other criteria outlined by the State Department.

To apply, individuals submit an online entry form during the designated registration period. Entries are limited to one per person, and multiple entries will result in disqualification. After the registration period closes, a computer-generated random selection process is used to select individuals for the DV program. Selected applicants are notified by mail and provided with further instructions on how to proceed with their immigrant visa application.

Winning the DV Lottery does not guarantee a Green Card, as applicants must still undergo a rigorous screening process, including background checks, interviews, and medical examinations. Additionally, the number of visas available through the DV Lottery is limited each year, and not all selected applicants will ultimately receive a Green Card.

Overall, the DV Lottery program provides a unique opportunity for individuals from underrepresented countries to pursue lawful permanent residency in the United States, contributing to the country’s diversity and cultural enrichment.
