vi. For tourist attractions. Water bodies serve as tourist attractions. Eg. Waterfalls, dams etc.

3. a) Causes of the 1948 riots
i. The killing of the ex-service men or veterans at the Crossroad
ii. The plight of the ex-service men or returnee soldiers (i.e. the ex-service men lack the following: housing, jobs, pension, incentives etc).
iii. The cutting down of cocoa trees affected by swollen shoot disease
iv. The practice of conditional sales aggravated the plight of the people
v. The Burns constitution did not provide enough room for African participation in the legislative and the executive Assembly.
vi. There were general shortage in the supply of essential commodities which led to high prices
vii. There were too many Europeans in the Civil Service with few Africa
viii. The Association of West African Merchants (AWAM) dwarfed and crippled African businesses.

b) Negative effects of the riots
• The riot led to the killing of the ex-servicemen namely; Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe and Private Odartey.
• It led to the arrest of the “Big six” which made them popular
• It brought about confusion in the UGCC leading to the breaking away of Nkrumah
• It also discouraged the Europeans from investing in the country
• It got several people injured and loss of properties as well.

c) Reason for the formation of the Watson Commission
The Watsson Commission was set up by the British government after the 1948 riots to find out the causes of the riots and make recommendation.
Some of these recommendations included; the promulgation of a new constitution was needed as a step towards self-government, Africans must head the Civil Service, the grievances of the ex-servicemen must be addressed, the people should be made happy at their work places among others.
