Theresa Kufour To Be Given State Burial; Funeral Date Announced

The former first lady of Ghana, Theresa Kufour will be given a state burial. This was announced by the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.

President Akufo Addo added that although there is nothing in the protocol books on deceased former First Ladies, he has decided to give the late wife of the former president of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor, a “whole state burial,” he said.

“It is an appreciation of my regard for her and I have the power and I will exercise it… she deserves it… a verified and dignified woman,” he said.

Theresah Kufour died in the afternoon of Sunday, 1st October, 2023. She died at the age of 87.

Date of Funeral

According to the family, the funeral rites will begin in Accra on Thursday, November 16, and end in Kumasi on Saturday, November 18, 2023

Theresa Kufour was born on 25th October, 1935 in Wenchi.

She was married to the former president of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufour, who was the president of Ghana from 2001 to 2009. John Agyekum Kufour is the second president of the fourth republic of Ghana. He came president after defeating the NDC in the 2000 general elections.

She has five children with John Kufuor, former president of Ghana. The names of her children include; J. Addo Kufuor, Nana Ama Gyamfi, Saah Kufuor, Agyekum Kufuor and Owusu Afriyie Kufuor.

Theresah Kufour started her education at the Catholic Convent, OLA, at Keta in the Volta Region of Ghana. She later went to London, where she was educated as a Registered General Nurse, in the Southern Hospital Group of Nursing. Edinburgh, Scotland.

After further study at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford and Paddington General Hospital, London, she qualified as a State Certified Midwife with a Certificate in Premature Nursing
