The National science and Maths Quiz begins in the year 1994 as an initiative by the Ghana Education Service to promote Science and Mathematics Education in the Country.
For the past three decades,the National Science and Maths Quiz has enrich student who had the opportunity to contest in the competition by exposing them to different kinds of learning strategies and ability to cope with the morden techniques in their field of study.
It has also help the students to showcase their knowledge and understanding in the field of Science related courses such as Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Agriculture and Mathematics.
Miss Ewurama Addy, professor of Biochemistry at University of Ghana, Legon was the first Quiz Mistress of the excited and educative program.
The current Quiz Mistress, Prof.Elsie Effah Kaufman took over as the Quiz Mistress in the year 2006 and has played a significant and a spectacular performance in promoting the Contest.
Recently, Dr. Quacoe a contestant in the 2005, was captured as a Quiz Mistress of one of preminalry stage, this shows that the science and maths quiz is providing well and equipping people in the science sector.
Students who pass through the contest also excel massively in their academic spheres.
For the past years Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (Legon PRESEC) has dominated in the NSMQ by winning the competition for eight (8) consecutive times leading the chart followed by Prempeh College who won the maiden edition.

One interesting fact is that no Girls’ School has been able to win this competition since it started.But In 2021,Fransica Lamini of Keta Senior High Technical School made a history by becoming the only female to be in the National Science and Maths Quiz Finals.
