Dam spillage: Water and electricity supply restored in Mepe

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has successfully taken significant steps towards restoring normalcy in Mepe, a community in the Volta Region of Ghana severely affected by flooding due to excess water spillage from the Akosombo Dam. Additionally, the VRA has managed to reinstate the community’s water supply in Aveyime, which was submerged by floodwaters two weeks ago.

In a press briefing held in Accra on Tuesday, October 24, Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, the Deputy Chief Executive of VRA, provided an update on the ongoing efforts to support the flood-affected regions and ensure that residents’ lives return to normal.

Mr. Obeng-Kenzo emphasized the VRA’s deep concern for the welfare of those living in the affected areas. He stated, “In the face of adversity, we have managed to restore electricity and water to the safe havens in Mepe and other affected communities. This accomplishment signifies a step forward in our mission to alleviate the difficulties faced by the residents.”

The decision to spill excess water from the Akosombo Dam was made due to high inflows into the Akosombo reservoir, causing the water level to exceed its upper limit. This precautionary measure was taken to prevent the water from overtopping the dam, which could have jeopardized its integrity.

Mr. Obeng-Kenzo explained that this controlled spillage was based on careful engineering analysis and judgment, with the primary focus on preserving lives and safeguarding the dam’s integrity.

In addition to restoring essential services, the VRA has also provided vital relief items to the affected communities since the spillage began. This includes the distribution of food, medications, tents, clean water, improved sanitation facilities, and other necessary supplies in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

The Deputy CEO expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, such as NADMO, the Ministry of Energy, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ministry of Health, and all those who have contributed to providing relief to the affected communities.

This commitment by the VRA to restore power and water services, coupled with the provision of essential relief items, underscores the organization’s dedication to alleviating the challenges faced by the communities impacted by the flood. The immediate restoration of these basic amenities is a significant step toward returning normalcy to the lives of those affected.
