Dam spillage: No outbreak of disease in affected communities – GHS boss

In the wake of the Akosombo Dam spillage, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, has provided reassuring news (No outbreak of disease). He confirmed that there have been no disease outbreaks in any of the communities affected by the spillage, attributing this to the efficiency of the health protocols put in place to manage the situation.

Dr. Kuma-Aboagye expressed his satisfaction with the current state of affairs, highlighting that, “two weeks into this disaster, we have not had any outbreak of disease, which often happens in many countries and many places.” This commendable outcome reflects the collective efforts to protect the health and well-being of the affected communities.

In an interview with Citi fm after his visit to some of the affected areas, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye disclosed, “We have brought some relief items, as well as mental health experts and psychologists, to assess the situation and determine what needs to be done.” This approach underscores a holistic response to the crisis, addressing both immediate needs and long-term mental health support for those who have been displaced.

The situation has not been without its challenges, as Dr. Kuma-Aboagye acknowledged, “In the long term, those who have been displaced will need psycho-social support, and we are also here to look at the plight of the 271 health workers who are part of the displaced community.” These efforts reflect a commitment to the physical and mental well-being of all those affected by the disaster.

Furthermore, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye clarified that any disease presence in the affected communities was pre-existing and not a direct result of the floods. This distinction is essential for understanding the health implications of the dam spillage accurately.
