Club Career

He started his professional football career in Austria with the club Austria Lustenau in 2016. His performances there caught the attention of scouts, leading to a move to FC Zurich in the Swiss Super League in 2017.

Dwamena continued to impress with his goal-scoring ability at FC Zurich, and his success earned him a transfer to La Liga side Levante in Spain in 2017. However, his time at Levante was affected by health issues, specifically a heart condition, which led to the cancellation of a proposed transfer to English club Brighton & Hove Albion in 2017.

After undergoing treatment and being cleared to play, Dwamena returned to action, joining various clubs on loan to regain form and fitness. These loan spells included Real Zaragoza in Spain and RCD Espanyol in the 2019-2020 season.

International Career

Dwamena didn’t get the chance to play for the youth national teams of his country Ghana. Raphael Dwamena was called into the senior team as part of the 30-man squad for the 2017 African Cup of Nations but was dropped from the 23-man squad.

Cause of Death

On 11 November 2023, Dwamena collapsed on the field in the 23rd minute of the first half of the round 13 match between Egnatia and Partizani which was being played for the Albanian First Tier National Football Super League also known as “Abissnet Superiore”. He suffered a cardiac arrest and died on the way to Kavajë Hospital. Eventually after his sudden tragic death all football and sports events in Albania were either postponed or suspended.

This is not the first time he has collapsed on the field. In October 2021 in Austrian Cup match during the first half of Blau-Weiss Linz’s game against Harterg, Dwamena collapsed on pitch and was shocked by the ICD and stabilized quickly
