Teacher Unions demand reverse and refund of tax on digital allowance as per the Collective Agreement
The pre-tertiary education unions in Ghana have, in a press release, called for the reversal and refund of the tax imposed on the complementary digital support allowance of teachers in the country.
This was contained in a letter dated December 12, 2024, and signed by the leadership of GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH.
In the letter, the teacher unions indicated that they had earlier, on November 21, 2024, asked the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to stop the tax imposed on the above allowance and refund the same to teachers.
The letter further reminded the GES of the Collective Agreement, which enjoins both parties to promote the growth and development of cooperation, trust, and respect and to endeavor to uphold these values in the implementation of the collective agreement.
The teacher unions also described as unfortunate the GES’ unilateral decision to deduct the tax from the complementary digital support allowance of teachers after the service and its leadership had promised not to do so.

“It is therefore unfortunate that the GES has unilaterally deducted the tax from the above-mentioned allowance, contrary to the agreement and promise that it would not be deducted,” the letter further stated.
The unions called on the GES to refund the deducted taxes to affected teachers with the needed urgency.
“We hereby demand that the GES should, as a matter of urgency, reverse the said tax deduction and refund the same to teachers without fail,” the press release indicated.

The three teacher unions are looking forward to a proactive move by the Ghana Education Service in the interest of teachers.
