The trial of the 14 individuals accused of conspiring to lynch young soldier Major Maxwell Mahama has taken a surprising turn. According to the State Prosecutors, 13 of the accused were “amazed” that Major Mahama had survived their brutal attack for an extended period. The only exception is William Baah, the Assemblyman for Denkyira Obuasi, who is charged with abetment, while the remaining 13 face charges of conspiracy.
The revelation emerged during the Prosecution’s closing address to the jury, delivered by Chief State Attorney Mrs. Evelyn Keelson. She emphasized that accused individuals, identified as A2 to A14, acted collectively with the common intent to kill the deceased, Major Mahama.
Mrs. Keelson pointed out that the evidence presented by the prosecution and its witnesses clearly showed that the accused acted in concert to commit the crime. She detailed the multiple attacks with cement blocks and shooting incidents, emphasizing that the accused were astonished at Major Mahama’s resilience.
“They (the accused) thought (wondered that) he had a charm because they had shot at him, hit him with stones, sticks, and cement blocks, and he was still alive,” Mrs. Keelson told the jury.

Mrs. Keelson also addressed the role played by William Baah, alias Misty, who is charged with abetment.
The Prosecution is set to continue its closing address, with the final charge of murder to be discussed on October 30. The State has previously presented 14 witnesses to bolster its case.
Out of the 14 individuals standing trial, three chose not to mount a defense, including Kofi Nyame, Bismark Abanga, and Kwadwo Anima. The remaining accused persons are William Baah, Bernard Asamoah, Charles Kwaning, Kwame Tuffour, Joseph Appiah Kubi, Michael Anim, John Bosie, Akwasi Asante, Charles Kwaning, and Emmanuel Badu.
The accused are facing charges ranging from abetment to conspiracy to commit murder and murder. All of them are currently in custody.
The case dates back to 2017 when Major Maxwell Mahama, a military officer stationed in the Central Region, was lynched by a mob in Denkyira Obuasi. The mob, prompted by false suspicions, attacked Major Mahama with clubs, cement blocks, machetes, and killed him, later setting a portion of his body on fire.
