All Heads of schools have been directed to allow Ramadan fast by Muslim students in secondary schools.
The GES has also called on to write to schools to indicate that schools that permit students to go through the Ramadan fast shall not be held responsible for any health condition of the student.
This new directive emanating from the GES comes after the leadership of the Cape-Coast-based Wesley Girls High School stopped Muslim students from fasting during the month of Ramadan and cited possible health conditions for its decision.
The Ghana Education Service has indicated that fasting activities undertaken by students in the past have led to health implications for students, hence the decision of the service to barred fasting by students irrespective of their religious background.
“It was therefore imperative that to ensure that the health of students was not compromised vis-a-vis their organized school schedules, this long-standing practice had to be maintained,” GES stated in its release.

Per the outcome of a meeting between the Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and the leadership of Wesley Girls School and the consideration given based on the rights of students, all students who wish to fast during school hours are to be permitted.
Schools will however not be held accountable should any health complications develop as a result of the fast the Education Minister according to the Education Minister.
