Former President Kufour Sends A Word Of Advice To President Akufo Addo – READ

John Agyekum Kufuor, the former president of Ghana, has said that Nana Akufo Addo should have the courage to fire his appointees if it turns out that they are no longer doing their jobs well.
Mr. Kufour says that it is the president’s job to make the hard decision to replace his appointments when they are no longer working.
The old politician said this in response to a question from well-known journalist Kwaku Sakyi Addo. When the Institute of Economic Affairs visited the former president at his home in Peduase, John Agyekum Kufuor gave a classic example of how he made some big changes during his time in office.
He said that even though he had hired someone who had been very supportive of his presidency, he had removed her from a position when it mattered most, even though she wasn’t happy about it.
“I didn’t shuffle just because I did it so often; no. Like I said about Mrs. Asmah, I liked her a lot and she helped me a lot when I was campaigning to become president… and how she helped set up MASLOC.
So, when we got power and I said, “Women and Children,” she tried to do it, but I saw that she wasn’t getting the support from women, especially younger women, that I thought she would.
“So, we wanted the young people to be excited about it. I saw that Alima could bring the young people on board, so I told Mrs. Asmah that it would be better for her to go to the fisheries and open the place up for us. So, that’s how I changed things up, and Alima joined the team. I thought Alima was making a difference with the young people… So, I didn’t just switch things around for no reason,” he said.
President John Agyekum Kufuor went on to say that the person in charge of the country needs to act like a coach and make sure that his or her best team is always on display.
“The president is like a coach; he or she is not just in charge of the team. You need to know what your ministers are doing and whether they’re being helpful or just average when you want more from them.
You should also have the courage to tell them, “You don’t belong here, go there, or maybe just sit aside.” “That thing shouldn’t happen just once a year; it should happen all the time,” he said.
