Many African countries import essentials such as fuel, medication, machinery, and food. The cost of these imports grows as the local currency depreciates against the dollar or euro, rising prices for both consumers and businesses.

This exacerbates social instability, reduces purchasing power, and feeds poverty.

The sharp reduction in the value of the naira since the middle of 2023 has played a significant role in record-high inflation in countries such as Nigeria, which reached 32% in the middle of 2025.

A weak currency also increases the burden of external debt. Many African countries borrow in foreign currency. As their local currency depreciates, the cost of repaying these loans in dollars or euros increases significantly.

This can lead to debt issues, defaults, and a greater reliance on foreign bailouts.

Countries such as Zambia and Ethiopia, for example, have had to seek debt restructuring due to their inability to meet foreign-currency debt obligations while their native currency has fallen.

Furthermore, volatility in a country’s currency reduces investor trust. Stabilizing and strengthening the local currency must be a top priority for African governments seeking to lift millions out of poverty and build internationally competitive economies.

Sixteen teenage Obogu Saviour Church members tragically died in a gruesome accident on the Juaso portion of the Accra-Kumasi highway.
The victims were returning from a weekend church retreat when their minibus collided directly with a fuel truck.

A mass burial was organized in Obogu as the community and family lamented the tragic loss of the youth.

Fifteen members of the Saviour Church who died in a horrific traffic accident on Monday, July 28, 2025, have been buried, bringing the agonizing chapter to an end while the community continues to grieve their dear ones.

According to accounts, all 15 deceased were laid to rest during a mass burial ceremony in Obogu, an Ashanti Region town.

Videos from the burial ceremony show that all the fatalities were buried in one enormous hole, with members of the community dressed in black and red funeral gowns, causing tremendous sadness throughout the area.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral, including family members, students, government figures, and sympathisers. The Obogu community is mourning what many regard as the darkest day in the history of the Saviour Church.

Elders, chiefs, and pastors are extending sympathy to grieving families while also warning drivers to remain careful and avoid complacency on the roadways.

The tragic tragedy occurred around 2:30 PM on Monday, July 28, 2025, on the Juaso portion of the Accra-Kumasi highway, when a Ford Transit mini-bus conveying the youth collided head-on with a fuel tanker.

Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker driver lost control while overtaking another vehicle. The crash ruined the bus altogether. Several bodies were trapped, necessitating the assistance of emergency services and residents, who struggled for hours to extract the deceased from the ruins.

The victims were returning from a youth retreat over the weekend when the sad tragedy happened. The majority of them ranged in age from 10 to 25, and they were all members of the Obogu branch of the Saviour Church’s youth ministry. Among the victims were two children of the head pastor.

UGMC To Start Hair Transplant In Ghana This Year after so many years. This is indeed good news to men, especially the bald ones. 

The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) will begin performing hair transplants as a sort of plastic surgery for bald people by the end of the year.

The World Health Organization (WHO) describes hair transplantation as a surgical treatment in which hair is transplanted from one part of the body (the donor area, which is typically the back or sides of the head) to a bald, thinning, or recipient area.

Dr Baffoe Gyan, Director of Medical Affairs at the UGMC, stated that the center was in the final stages of introducing the innovation to the public after successfully piloting it.

In an interview with Graphic Online’s Timothy Ngnenbe last Friday, he stated that the endeavor was part of the facility’s ambition to become a world-class hub for all medical solutions.

He stated that the surgeon in charge of the hair transplant innovation received training in New York and returned home to practice, “and we are getting results. The test was conducted on our own doctor, whose hair is now incredibly fine”

“What we are left with is to expand it to the rest of the population, but before we do that, we need to ensure that we have enough doctors to cover the service so that if demand becomes too great, we can handle it,” he said.

According to the World Health Organization, genetics, hormonal changes, medical problems, stress, and certain drugs can all contribute to baldness or hair loss.

The world body goes on to say that the most prevalent type of baldness, androgenetic alopecia (also known as male or female pattern baldness), is mostly inherited and linked to aging and hormones.

Dr. Gyan stated that a team of medical experts was being assembled and trained to get the necessary skills for a complete deployment of the service.

He noted that the UGMC’s youthful medical personnel, who were being trained for the hair transplant, were eager and ready to deliver when the necessary assistance was offered.

He encouraged Ghanaians living overseas who have experience in new medical or clinical solutions to make themselves available and contribute to the growth of local ability to assist people.

“It is our goal that by 2027, we should be able to do almost everything medically possible, so we need all experts, home and abroad, to be part of this journey,” he told reporters.
