The country is witnessing some bizarre challenges of the Free SHS in recent times indeed. The latest is the conversion of toilet cubicles used as dormitories by school heads to deal with the huge number of students. This is a clear result of the lack of planning as far as the Free SHS is concerned.
The video related to the sad reality has been trending in the last few hours. The GES has been compelled by the disgraceful video to interdict and suspend the headmaster and senior housemaster of Ghana Senior High School at Koforidua for converting a toilet facility into a mode of accommodation for their students.
The Free SHS is suffering indeed, and its problems never get solved. Recently, former President Mahama complained that the government is feeding students with dog food and that the quality of meals served needs to be looked at. In the heat of the Dog Food Fed Free SHS students saga, the GES called on the former president to apologize.
Now that the GES through its head of school at the Ghana Senior High School at Koforidua has converted the school’s toilet under construction into a student’s accommodation, the question is where is the infrastructure development the government has built to help deal with the Green and Yellow Tracks?
It looks as though, the challenges that confronted the Free SHS some seven years ago are this prevalent in our schools. Issues of accommodation, school feeding, and others continue to persist despite the efforts by the government to deal with them.
The Ghana Education Service has indicated that Ghana Senior High School at Koforidua was not expected to convert the school’s toilet facilities into a school dormitory.

Per the GES data made public in its press release on accommodation in the school, out of the 1790 vacancies declared by the school, only 1467 students have enrolled. The school had enough room for students who had enrolled.
The Minister of Education and The Director General of Education must also step aside if they believe efforts by the head teacher and his staff at Ghana Senior High School at Koforidua deserve to be suspended for improvising to get accommodation for students who were placed in their school by the GES and MoE.
