GES, MoE eat humble pie, reverse academic calendar to trimester

The GES and the MoE backtrack on decision to implement a semester system at the Pre-Tertiary level for the 2022 academi year. For the first time in many years, the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education have listened to the wisdom of CSOs, teachers and teacher unions by reversing the infamous semester calendar introduced fto the a trimester calendar for the 2022 academic year.
In the hit of the issue, teacher unions warned the GES that if the managers of pre tertiary Education failed to rescind their decision, it should expect the unions to react in ways that will likely cripple the calendar.
Although the GES has not officially apologized for taking the earlier decision without consulting key stakeholders including CSOs and teacher unions, it has released a presser indicating KG, Primary and JHS students will run a trimester academic calendar.

While some educators have descibed the move by the GES and MoO as very shameful and embarrassing. Others hold the view that after meeting with union leaders GES and MoE, realized they didn’t think through the decision to introduce a semester calendarit properly.
Teachers could not fathom how the GES and MoE believed pupils in KG and at the basic level decided to introduce semester academic calendar for the three group of learners.
Now that the calendar has been changed, all teachers look forward to is the supply of textbooks and other TLMs for the effective implementation of the new curriculum from KG to basic 9. Further delay in the supply of textbooks will challenge teachers and learners for another term or academic year.
