Every BECE graduate is anxious of knowing when the result will be released, but equally important is the need to know how the 2022 BECE result will be graded by WAEC.
The BECE has a 9 scale grade, with the best grade being 1 and the worst being 9.
Each score obtained in each subject falls within one of the nine grades. When a candidate obtains a score within a given range of scores, a grade is awarded.
Candidates who obtain grade 9 in Integrated Science or Mathematics are not placed in any school and are deemed to have failed the exam. Only a re-sit of those papers or subjects and passing them will allow such candidates to be placed in a public Free SHS.
BECE Score Ranges and Grades Obtainable
Below is the standard WAEC grading for BECE. However, every year WAEC may decide to update the scale based on the performance of candidates.
90-100 is graded as 1 – the interpretation is HIGHEST. It is the best grade in the grading system.
80-89 is graded as 2 – the interpretation is HIGHER. It is the 2nd best grade in the grading system.
70-79, is graded as 3 – the interpretation is HIGH. It is the 2nd best grade in the grading system.
60 -69 is grade 4, – HIGH AVERAGE
55 – 60 is classified as 5 – AVERAGE.
50-54 is grade 6 – LOW AVERAGE is the interpretation in the grading system.
40-49 is considered as grade 7 and described as LOW
35-39 is 8 which is LOWER in the Stanine grading system.
Between 0-34 is 9 which is the LOWEST grade (Fail).
WAEC does not use fixed grading system in the BECE although the above is the standard.
The examination body uses a variable grading system, where the general performance of candidates in the BECE determines the grades in a particular subject.
For a example, a candidate can score 80 in mathematics and be graded 1 and the same candidate can score 80 in RME and be graded 2 depending on performance of other candidates, especially when many of them score higher marks.
Apart from the above, candidates are also graded based on their raw scores.
The raw score aggregate is often the basis for placing BECE Candidates in respective schools during the school placement.
The raw score system collates the actual score obtained by a student for the core subjects as well as those of any other best two subjects to determine the overall raw score.

The better your BECE grade, the greater your chances of getting placed into the school of your choice. However, the more your raw score, the easier you get placed in a secondary school of your choice and the programme you wish to study.
The GES uses the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) in placing BECE graduates into respective public Free SHS.
Candidates must know that, the raw score is critical and determines their placement in any school.
