ICD to drag GES to court over ‘biased’ BECE school placement

ICD to drag GES to court over ‘biased’ BECE school placement. Private schools have complained of unfair school placement which they say favoured students of public basic schools. Comments by the DG of the GES indicating he would prefer 90% placement of pubic school BECE graduates while students from private schools write entrance examination has also complicated the issues.
Education Think Tank – Institute of Child Development (ICD) on behalf of the Private Schools Association, Councils and Coalition has taken the responsibility to challenge the 2021 BECE school placement results in court over discrimination.
The educational multipurpose-based entity in a statement copied to EducationWeb said the court action is also based on the position of private schools on the 2021 BECE results released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
“9 out of 10 of private schools we spoke to on the 2021 BECE expectation believe their candidates were marked down or there have been a massaged of private schools results to favour public schools,” the Development said in a release.
Commenting on the proposal by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service for 90% placement slots into ‘Category A’ SHS to be reserved for public schools, ICD said the move is a scheme by GES to weaken private education.
“It looks as if there is a grand scheme by GES to weaken private education because of their quality education success at the pre-tertiary which many Ghanaians believe and support strongly,” the Institute of Child Development (ICD) noted.
A legal team the Insitute said has been constituted to challenge the constitutionality of the 30% placement reservation slot for government school BECE candidates into Senior High Schools at the Supreme Court of Ghana.
“This is to make sure that Ghanaian child is discriminated against: whether from the private or public establishment, race, origin, colour gender, status and socio-economic background,” the Education Think Tank said in its press release.
To support the legal motion, private school stakeholders and concerned citizens have been asked to stand with ICD and support private schools in the Supreme Court battle for the fair and equal treatment of the Private School Child.
