Majority in Parliament appeals to UTAG to resume work

Striking University Teachers of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) have been asked to go back to the lecture halls in the best interest of students. This appeal was made by the Majority in Parliament.
The lectures had deserted the lecture halls for more than one month as a way to demand the government to offer better conditions of service.
On Tuesday, 15th February, the National Labour Commission (NLC) secured a court order for the lecturers to return to work.
In a press conference in Parliament on Wednesday, Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin remarked that despite the court decision, which UTAG has hinted at ignoring, academics should respect the hardship of students and return to work.
“Ours is to implore UTAG to examine the situation of students and the government’s good faith in continuing to seat them.” And on that basis, I implore them to return to the classroom and help our children in school.

“Of course, they have every legitimate right to demand what is theirs. At the same time we are pleading with them to balance that demand with the plight of our students so that the academic calendar is not unduly disrupted,” he pleaded.
