New caretaker GES Ashanti Regional Director of Education appointed
A new caretaker as the GES Ashanti Regional Director of Education takes up the vacant post as the current Director retires. The outgoing director in the person of Ms. Owusu Afriyie will be replaced by Mr. David Oppong, who until now was the Metro Director of Education in Kumasi.
His work as the new GES Ashanti Regional Director (Caretaker) took effect on September 5th per information available to Ghanaeducation.org.
At a brief but eventful handing-over ceremony in the Ashanti region, the outgoing Region Director, Ms. Mary Owusu Afriyie handed over her duties and responsibilities as the Ashanti Regional Education Director to him as she proceeds on her “compulsory retirement” after her loyalists failed to lobby for another extension of her contract, sources say.
It will be recounted that in August 2022 teacher unions raised concerns about the re-appointment of retired officers to positions when there were newly promoted persons ready to take up such roles. The Pre-Tertiary Education Unions demanded the removal of all retired officers of the education service who were still at the post on contract. They demanded that these officers proceed with their compulsory retirement. The calls intensified as a result of the reappointment of Mr. Anthony Boateng as Deputy Director General (MS) on contract.
“If by 30th September 2022 such persons are still at post, we call on our members to disregard directives issued by these persons,” The press statement said.
Per information available to the Ghanaeducation.org, Ms. Owusu Afriyie failed to secure a reappointment as calls by individuals and pressure groups on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to get Ms. Owusu Afriyie, to go on retirement intensified.
In the heat of the push to axe her out of the office, Nana Asare Bediako who led this charge describes Ms. Owusu Afriyie as incompetent.
“The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, by now, should have gone on pension, she is overage. She’s passed her retirement age. My understanding is that she has applied for an extension despite being overage. She is not the only person who can serve Ghana and Asanteman. Some people have the energy to do the work very well. So she needs to go on by force retirement”, Obama, as he is affectionately called, told Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM.
Sources also reveal to dailymailgh.com that a decision has been reached by the Governing Council to replace all retired officers with new regional directors, in an acting capacity for the interim whiles GES initiates steps to appoint permanent regional directors.
