Have you seen the New JHS Proposed Periods and Length of School Day?
Following the release of the 2022 academic calendar for Junior High Schools (JHSs), a new JHS proposed period and length of school day have been sighted by Ghanaeducation.org.
The proposed periods and length of the school day from the GES give clear lesson periods allocated for each subject from Basic 7 to Basic 10.
The duration of each lesson is 50 minutes; the total period proposed for each day is 8, which translates into 4 periods per week per subject.
Breakdown of the New JHS Proposed Periods and Length of School Day
Instruction time for each school day is expected to add up to 6 hours and 40 minutes, irrespective of whether the school starts and ends as follows:.
a. 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
b. 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
c. 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Per the New JHS Proposed Periods and Length of School Day, Co-curricular activities time allocated per week is 50 minutes, and each day’s school section will have one hour of break, which is divided into two breaks of 30 minutes each.
In all, the length of each school day is 8 hours and 30 minutes.
Both public and private schools can either adopt any of the three periods provided or fit their lessons into the time. From the above, the third option, which means starting a school day at 8 a.m. and closing at 4:30 p.m., may be the ideal time for most schools. However, for most private schools, the most ideal contact hours option will be option B. This school starts at 7:30 and ends at 4:00 pm every day.
Do not forget that, per the suggested timetable, each break should be 30 minutes long. Thus, 60 minutes of break each day.
Again, there are 8 periods each day.
Each period is 50 minutes.
Students have a total of 40 per week.
Each subject has the maximum number of periods it must have per week. For instance.
Mathematics has 4 periods which add up to 200 minutes a week while Computing has 3 periods which adds up to 150 minutes per week.
