3 Things To Watch In Michigan’s Presidential Primary

3 Things To Watch In Michigan's Presidential Primary

Michigan’s presidential primary on Tuesday will be the most visible test yet of voter dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden’s response to the Israel-Hamas conflict, as well as another test of voter interest in former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s waning GOP campaign.

Critics of the president, who believe he has been too lenient on Israel’s bombardment of Gaza in its fight against Hamas, are urging voters to cast “uncommitted” primary ballots to express their displeasure and pressure the White House to be less supportive of Israel’s tactics.

Biden’s campaign has met with community leaders in Michigan, which has a sizable Arab population, and the president has stated that he wants Israel to change course while still supporting them against Hamas militants following Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attack. However, protests have continued as the death toll in Gaza rises.

Meanwhile, Haley is looking for a strong showing in the state as she attempts to chip away at former President Donald Trump’s massive primary lead, which was highlighted by his 20-point victory in her home state over the weekend.

Here are three things to watch in Michigan’s Presidential Primary on Tuesday night;

1. How big will the ‘uncommitted’ vote be?

Biden has attempted to walk a fine line in the Gaza conflict, criticizing Israel’s operations as “over the top” while declining to condition future aid to Israel on steps such as a permanent cease-fire or negotiations with the Palestinians.

That strategy has earned him critics on both sides, with Republicans arguing that he should be less critical of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and progressives and Arab Americans advocating for a more aggressive stance.

The president’s victory in the primary is not in doubt, given that he faces no major opponents and has won big in early nominating races. However, Michigan is a razor-thin swing state, and any drop could spell trouble in November.

According to the US Census Bureau, the state has the highest proportion of people of Middle Eastern or North African descent of any battleground. Wayne County, which includes Dearborn and Detroit, has the largest percentage of any county.

Trump won Michigan by less than 11,000 votes in 2016, while Biden won the state by approximately 154,000 votes in 2020. According to the 2020 census, more than 300,000 people in Michigan claim Middle Eastern and North African ancestry, far exceeding the state’s previous two margins of victory.

The Biden campaign has acknowledged the backlash. A spokesperson stated, in part, that he is “working hard to earn every vote in Michigan.”

2. High stakes for Whitmer

Biden isn’t the only Democrat who may be impacted by the results on Tuesday.

Gretchen Whitmer, the state’s governor, is frequently mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2028 after winning her seat in 2018 and then winning reelection in 2022, demonstrating her ability to easily win one of the most important states in the Electoral College.

Her victories were fueled by support from moderates, suburbanites, and Black voters, all of which Biden will need to shore up if he wants to win in November.

Whitmer is also one of eight national co-chairs for Biden’s reelection campaign, and her ability to help turn out voters for him in the state later this year could help her resume — and burnish her goodwill in the party — ahead of what will almost certainly be a crowded primary in 2028.

The governor has increased her appearances on the trail on Biden’s behalf, though she has also received criticism for statements that were considered too supportive of Israel or not supportive enough.

3. What’s going on with the Republican primary?

Republicans are holding their own primary on Tuesday night, and it’s not sounding right.

That’s because the party will also hold a nominating convention on March 2. Sixteen delegates will be awarded based on Tuesday’s results, with 39 awarded next month, when only elected party officials can vote.

The split occurred when the Democratic-controlled state government moved the primary date up to align with Biden’s preferred overall primary calendar. However, the Republican Party’s rules prohibit certain states from holding contests before March 1, so the Michigan GOP devised a hybrid system to avoid being penalised by the national organisation.

State Republicans are also dealing with increased uncertainty in the midst of a power struggle within the Michigan GOP.

Former Chair Kristina Karamo was removed from her position earlier this year, and the Republican National Committee named former Rep. Pete Hoekstra as the new state party leader. Karamo, on the other hand, insists she is still in charge and plans to sue.

Overall, Trump is the overwhelming favourite to win the primary. Haley has counted on potential crossover support, given that Democrats and independents can vote in the GOP primary, but the increased focus on Biden may draw their votes to that contest instead.

Police Arrest 3 Suspects In Killing Of Man On Bronx Subway Car

Police Arrest 3 Suspects In Killing Of Man On Bronx Subway Car

Three people have been arrested in connection with the death of a man on a Bronx subway car last week, police announced Tuesday.

William Alvarez, a 45-year-old Bronx resident, was fatally shot after arguing with one of the suspects on a D Train in the Bronx around 5 a.m. Friday. According to police, what happened was captured on surveillance video from trains, tube stations and the street.

The three are charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. On Monday, members of the United States Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force discovered them in a Bronx apartment building.

The suspects, Justin Herde, 24, Betty Cotto, 38, and Alfredo Trinidad, 42, were apprehended by members of the US Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force on Monday at an apartment in the Bronx, according to the NYPD.

They were charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon for the killing of William Alvarez, 45, who was shot in the stomach after getting into an argument with one of the suspects on a D Train in the Bronx around 5 a.m. Friday, according to police.

According to police, the incident was captured on surveillance videos from trains, tube stations and the street, which assisted investigators in identifying and locating the suspects.

Alvarez, a father of two, was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after being shot. His family and friends described him as a hardworking and loving father who was deeply committed to his children.

The motive for the shooting is unknown, but police say it was unrelated to gang activity or robbery.

The fatal shooting marks the third death in the tube system this year. It came shortly after a 35-year-old man was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at another tube station in the Bronx earlier this month.

WABC-TV reports that transit crimes are up 13% from this time last year. The NYPD has implemented longer, 12-hour shifts for police officers assigned to the underground system in response to the increase in crime.

The MTA board, which oversees the underground system, discussed the most recent crime statistics during its monthly committee meetings on Monday. The board members expressed concern for the safety of the riders and workers, urging the city to send more police officers and mental health professionals to the tube system.

Billionaire Widow Donates $1 Billion To Cover Tuition At Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Ruth Gottesman, the widow of billionaire financier David Gottesman, has left an indelible mark on the future of medical education through her pioneering philanthropy. The billionaire widow donates $1 Billion to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx.

Ruth Gottesman’s legacy, at 93 years old, goes far beyond her enormous wealth. She was a former professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine who spent her career researching learning disabilities and advocating for adult literacy programmes.

She is now the chair of the college’s board of trustees, and she is still shaping its future. The importance of Ruth Gottesman’s contribution cannot be underestimated.

It is the largest gift ever given to a medical school in the United States. With this extraordinary act of generosity, she has forever changed the face of medical education. Financial constraints will no longer derail the ambitions of aspiring doctors and researchers.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s annual tuition is currently nearly $60,0001. For many students, the financial burden can be overwhelming. Ruth Gottesman’s visionary gift will ensure that future generations of medical students receive full tuition coverage.

This radical shift ensures that the college can attract students who are committed to its mission, regardless of their financial situation. Ruth’s late husband, David Gottesman, was a protégé of legendary investor Warren Buffett and an early investor in Berkshire Hathaway Inc. When he passed away in September 2022, he left behind a significant portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway stocks. Ruth Gottesman, with characteristic humility, revealed that her husband’s instructions were simple: “Do whatever you think is right with it.”.

The Bronx, where the college is located, has significant health challenges. As the most unhealthy county in New York State, it urgently requires dedicated healthcare professionals. Ruth Gottesman’s donation not only eliminates financial barriers, but it also enables students to pursue ambitious projects and ideas that would otherwise be out of reach.

According to Yaron Tomer, the Marilyn and Stanley Katz Dean at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, “This donation radically revolutionizes our ability to continue attracting students who are committed to our mission, not just those who can afford it”.  Ruth Gottesman’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those who have followed in her footsteps.

Note: The annual tuition for Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s MD programme is almost $60,000, and fourth-year students will receive reimbursement for their spring semester tuition.

Mahama To Name 2024 Running Mate On Thursday March 7

John Mahama Names Running Mate On Thursday March 07, 2024

The NDC has scheduled a meeting for Thursday, March 7, 2024, to select and name the running mate for John Dramani Mahama.

This decision follows Mahama’s formal submission, in accordance with Article 45 of the NDC Constitution.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, February 27, by Fifi Fiavi Kwettey, the party’s General Secretary, it was revealed that the National Executive Committee would convene following consultations with the Council of Elders.

According to Kwettey, “The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has today received a formal communication from our Presidential Candidate, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, regarding the nomination of his running mate in accordance with Article 45 of the NDC Constitution.”

“The party is pleased to announce that a meeting of the Council of Elders will convene at 11:00 hrs on Thursday, March 07, 2024, to deliberate on this significant matter. Subsequently, the National Executive Committee will gather at 14:00 hrs on the same day to further consider the nomination,” Kwettey added.

The venue and logistical details for these meetings will be communicated directly to all participants in due course. The NDC expressed confidence that the Running Mate would bring a wealth of experience, expertise, and dedication to their campaign, complementing the vision of John Dramani Mahama in “Building the Ghana We Want together.”

The party emphasized its commitment to positive transformation and progress for Ghana and thanked supporters for their unwavering commitment. The NDC called for unity in achieving a brighter future for the nation.

The former president is seeking re-election in the 2024 elections. Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was Mr. Mahama’s running mate in the 2016 and 2020 general elections, respectively.

Aside from Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, who is the favourite to be selected as the running mate;

Julius Debrah, a former chief of staff in the erstwhile John Mahama government from January 2013 to January 2017, is also a strong potential candidate of choice for the NDC ticket. He hails from the Eastern Region and he was said to be top of the list.

Also, Kwame Awuah-Darko is a politician, entrepreneur, and banker, the third son of the late Nana Awuah-Darko Ampem I, who reigned as Nkosuohene of the Asante Juaben Traditional Area in the Ashanti Region. He was the strongest potential vice-presidential candidate for the NDC from the Ashanti Region

All African Games LOC confirmed Akufo Addo’s US$48 million “operational expenses”: Hon Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa

s LOC confirmed Akufo Addo's US$48 million “operational expenses

Following the All African Games LOC’s explanations regarding Hon. Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa’s expose that the government has budgeted US$48 million in “operational expenses” for the All African Games, Hon. Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the All African Games has confirmed his investigations.

According to the LOC, “the 48 million quoted in the letter leaked by Hon. Ablakwa as the operational budget for the hosting and organisation of the games goes into recurrent expenditure, and the LOC will be in a better position to give a breakdown when the games are over.”

Recurrent expenditure, as used in the explanations above, is the same as operation expense in accounting.

Based on the above paragraph in the response given by the LOC, Hon. Ablakwadid indicates that the LOC has confirmed that the government was spending the amount his investigations made public.

Below are the full details he put out after the response from the LOC.

The LOC has duly confirmed my impeccable and incontrovertible findings that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government is spending a staggering US$48million (GHS602million) on “operational expenses” in hosting the 13th African Games.

This figure is distinct from the US$ 195 million (GHS2.4 billion) already spent largely on infrastructure.

I note from their press statement that they disingenuously avoid a response to the fundamental concern of proceeding to spend GHS602 million when Parliament approved GHS100 million.

It is most bizarre for the LOC to state in its third paragraph that they can only provide a breakdown of the US$ 48 million (GHS602 million) when the games are over. The logical question that arises is how they came to the conclusion that they need US$ 48 million if they do not have a breakdown.

Our parliamentary caucus will not renege on our constitutional mandate of demanding full accountability.

More revelations soon.

For God and Country.

The US$48 million “operational expenses became public knowledge after Hon. Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa’s expose on the matter.

Government Counters Ablakwa ‘s Allegations on All African Games Spending

Government Ablakwa African Games

In a response to claims made by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa concerning Government ‘s overbudgetting of the All African Games to be held in Ghana, the Local Organising Committee (LOC), has dismissed these allegations as inaccurate. Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, the Executive Chairman of the LOC, issued a statement refuting the MP’s assertion that over GH¢604m had been recklessly allocated for the event.

Ablakwa had raised concerns over what he perceived as an egregious overspending on the operational budget for the games, suggesting a 500% increase over the approved amount by parliament. According to him, the government, the sports ministry, and the LOC were planning to expend an exorbitant sum of US$48 million (approximately GH¢604 million) on operational expenses alone, separate from the US$195 million (GHS2.4 billion) already disbursed for infrastructure.

However, the LOC’s statement clarified the situation, arguing that the operational budget had been accumulating since the inception of the committee nearly four years ago by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. They contested Ablakwa ‘s portrayal of the budget as being confined to the 18-day duration of the games, scheduled for March 8-23, 2024.

ALSO READ: Mahama ‘s 24-hour Economy is Empty – Barker-Vormawor (ghanaeducation.org)

The LOC emphasized that such a monumental event, hosting 54 African countries for the first time since its 1965 inception, naturally incurs significant costs across various domains including medical and anti-doping measures, transportation, accommodation, and catering, among others.

Dr. Ofosu-Asare’s statement further clarified that the quoted $48 million encompasses recurrent expenditures necessary for the comprehensive hosting and organization of the Games, promising a detailed breakdown post-event. The statement highlighted the complexity and financial demands of hosting such a significant sporting tournament, which includes expenses for branding, games management systems, team Ghana’s preparation, broadcasting, and equipment for 29 sporting disciplines.

This rebuttal comes after Ablakwa ‘s claim of financial impropriety involving the president, the sports ministry, and the LOC. He criticized a fundraiser organized by the presidency for the games as improper and pledged to summon the sports minister before parliament to address the controversy.

As the debate continues, the government’s statement aims to reassure the public and stakeholders of the transparency and accountability surrounding the financial management of the 13th All African Games. With the LOC’s commitment to providing a post-games financial report, stakeholders are awaiting further clarifications to ensure that the historic event remains a source of national pride rather than controversy.

CCTV Footage Shows How Driver And Passengers Escaped Armed Robbers Attack On Accra – Kumasi Road

CCTV Footage Shows How Driver And Passengers Escaped Armed Robbers Attack On Accra- Kumasi Road

An awesome journey nearly turned into a tragedy when armed robbers attacked driver and passengers on the Accra – Kumasi highway. CCTV footage showed everything that happened.

In the video which is making waves on the internet, the driver and passengers heading from Kumasi to Accra got stopped in the middle of the road at dawn. The armed men started shooting at the vehicle. The driver immediately reversed the vehicle. As the car was moving backward, the armed men continued shooting. No one was hurt as they reversed to a very safe location. However, other vehicles that were infront of the vehicle may have fallen victim.

Typically, armed robbers operate by ambushing vehicles at secluded or poorly lit stretches of the road. They may use makeshift roadblocks or employ sudden, aggressive tactics to force vehicles to stop. Once immobilized, they swiftly move to disarm and intimidate the occupants, demanding valuables such as phones, money, and other belongings. Market women, known to carry substantial amounts of cash due to their business transactions, become prime targets for these criminals.

The modus operandi of these robbers often involves swift and calculated actions, designed to instill fear and coerce compliance from their victims. In the chaotic moments of the robbery, passengers and drivers are left with little choice but to surrender their possessions to avoid potential harm. The robbers capitalize on the element of surprise and the vulnerability of their targets, making it difficult for victims to resist or seek help.

Moreover, these incidents tend to occur frequently during the early hours of the morning, particularly at dawn when visibility is low, and traffic on the road is sparse. The cover of darkness combined with the quietness of the hour provides robbers with ideal conditions to carry out their criminal activities with minimal risk of detection.

In response to these security challenges, authorities have implemented various measures aimed at enhancing surveillance and improving law enforcement along the Accra- Kumasi road. However, combating such criminal activities requires a multifaceted approach, including increased patrols, community engagement, and measures to address the underlying socio- economic factors that drive individuals to engage in robbery.

Despite efforts to improve security, travelers along the Accra- Kumasi road, especially during the night, are advised to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary stops in isolated areas, and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities promptly. While the risk of armed robbery cannot be entirely eliminated, proactive measures can help mitigate the threat and enhance the safety of road users.
