Otto Addo sacked as Black Stars Coach

The manager of the Black Stars of Ghana, Otto Addo, has been sacked following his abysmal performance with the Black Stars.
Ghana sacked him after the team suffered defeats to Germany and Austria in their buildup to the 2026 FIFA World Cup games.
While the latest decision by the Ghana Football Association plunges the Black Stars into a period of uncertainty, it also ushers the team into a new era and direction.
The teeming supporters of the Black Stars started calling for the sacking of the coach just after he failed to qualify the Black Stars for the 2025 AFCON hosted by Morocco.
However, the coach has time and again failed to prove he is the man for the job, and giving the high stakes as the FIFA World cup draws nearer, the difficult decision has been taken to salvage the team and shape it for a better performance at the World Cup. This brings to an era the second coming of Coach Otto Addo as head coach of the Blacks starts.
The timing of Addo’s dismissal reflects mounting pressure following back-to-back disappointing performances in high-profile friendlies. A humiliating 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna last Friday exposed deep tactical and structural flaws, while Monday’s narrow loss to Germany—sealed by Deniz Undav’s late winner—did little to restore confidence despite a marginally improved display.
These results have amplified an already polarized debate around Addo’s suitability to lead Ghana on the global stage.
Inconsistency and a divided verdict
Addo’s second spell in charge has been defined by sharp contrasts. On one hand, he delivered a flawless qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup — six wins and one draw — restoring belief after a turbulent period.
The last three head coaches of the Ghana Black Stars, in chronological order, are as follows:
Otto Addo coached the team from March 2024 to March 2026. After a previous stint in 2022, Otto Addo returned to the role on a 34-month contract in early 2024. He was sacked on March 30th, 2026, exactly two years after his return.
Chris Hughton coached the Black Stars from February 2023 to January 2024. The former Premier League manager took over the team after serving as a technical advisor. He was relieved of his duties following the Black Stars’ disappointing group-stage exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.
Milovan Rajevac took over from September 2021 to January 2022. He was known for his successful run with Ghana in 2010. Rajevac returned for a second stint but was sacked after the team failed to progress past the group stage of the 2021 AFCON. However, between Milovan Rajevac and Chris Hughton, Otto Addo also served as the head coach (initially in a caretaker capacity) to lead Ghana through the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and the tournament itself in Qatar before stepping down to focus on his role at Borussia Dortmund.

What next for Ghana?
The immediate priority for the GFA is the appointment of a new head coach capable of restoring confidence, imposing tactical clarity and maximizing the potential of a talented but underperforming squad.
With the Black Stars set to open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto before facing England and Croatia, the margin for error is rapidly shrinking.
