Do you have an idea of the types of WAEC questions to expect in 2024 BECE?

With the introduction of the new curriculum in 2019, the 2024 BECE is expected to be different and deviate from the usual BECE in many ways. Before the introduction of the new curriculum, BECE candidates had to answer direct questions.

Concerning the new curriculum and this year’s BECE, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has yet to outline clearly how it intends to structure the BECE questions.

Stakeholders do not know if the GES and WAEC will alter the typical BECE questioning approach from the usual What is, Explain, etc. to questions that demand students to reason logically.

Another approach to asking questions will be to use case studies and preambles to questions and expect students to deduce meaning from them and answer questions that follow.

The use of images as leading hints for questions to be asked can also be used.

However, the GES and WAEC are yet to make public any information on how questions will be structured.

If there are going to change, then, there will also be the need for proactive early public education as well as some training for teachers in both public and private schools at the basic school level.

What are the standards and likely question types for 2024 BECE?

Let us look at some new ways that BECE questions may be posed to students. Do you think our students are ready for similar, simpler questions if GES/WAEC are to use the application of knowledge and case studies in the 2024 BECE?

Examples of Science Questions Requiring Knowledge Application:

Question 1:

1. Imagine a world experiencing a gradual decrease in its rotation speed. What would be the long-term consequences for climate, day/night cycles, and biological life? Brainstorm the potential impacts and propose possible adaptations for living organisms.
2. You are tasked with designing a sustainable, energy-efficient home for a remote location with limited resources. Brainstorm creative ways to harness renewable energy sources and optimise resource usage while maintaining comfort and convenience.

Question 2: Maya loves the sweet, juicy mangoes from her village’s trees. But this year, her favorite “Solar Sammy” mango tree is acting weird! Its mangoes are smaller and drier than usual. Can Maya, a budding scientist, solve the mystery?

1. Sun Slump: Maya notices Solar Sammy doesn’t get as much sunlight as other trees. Explain how sunlight affects the “food-making” process in leaves (photosynthesis) and why Solar Sammy’s mangoes might be suffering.

2. Thirsty Roots: The soil around Solar Sammy is like rock! Maya thinks water might be hard to reach. Explain how water gets into plant roots and why thirsty roots could lead to smaller mangoes.

3. Watering Experiment: Maya plants two mango seeds: one in Solar Sammy’s soil, one in good soil. She waters them carefully. What might happen to each seed, based on water movement and plant needs?

4. Leafy Clues: Solar Sammy’s leaves look tired and rolled up. Maya remembers learning about cells. Explain how water movement into and out of plant cells affects their shape, and how this might explain the leaves’ droopy appearance.

5. Sammy’s Savior: Using her knowledge, Maya comes up with a plan to help Solar Sammy thrive. What could she do to improve sunlight, water access, or cell health?

Bonus Challenge: Can Maya adapt her solution to help other struggling mango trees in the village?

1. Study the diagram above carefully and identify the two phenomena happening (2 marks)
2. Explain each of the phenomena observed in the diagram. (6 marks)

4. Sketch two seperate diagrams for the phenomena’s with at least three labels.

Question types to expect in 2024 BECE: Religious and Moral Education

1. Explain what is happening in this picture in the area of religion (4 MARKS)
2. Discuss why a journey to this location is important (8MKS)
3. Give four reasons why people of this religion visit this location every year (8 marks)
4. What is the history behind the location? (4 marks)

The types of questions demonstrated in this post are not coming from WAEC or GES but are our internally thought of questions types given that the students would be assessed with the new curriculum. If the kind of questions asked by WAEC do not change slightly then the changing of the curriculum was to some extent needless.
