2024 Under-19 Cricket World Cup; Here’s Everything You Need To Know

2024 Under-19 Cricket World Cup; Here's Everything You Need To Know

The ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup is a prestigious international tournament organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) specifically for national under-19 teams. Initially known as the Youth Cricket World Cup, its inaugural edition took place in 1988. However, due to various reasons, the tournament was not held again until 1998. Since then, it has been held biennially, with the ICC taking charge of its organization.

The tournament’s format has evolved over the years. While the first edition featured only eight participating teams, subsequent editions have expanded to include sixteen teams. This expansion has allowed for greater representation from cricket-playing nations around the world.

India holds the distinction of being the most successful team in the history of the tournament, having clinched the title on five occasions. Following closely behind are Australia with three titles and Pakistan with two. Additionally, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, and the West Indies have each secured the championship once.

Notably, some teams have reached the tournament finals but have yet to emerge victorious. Both New Zealand and Sri Lanka have made it to the final stage without managing to secure a win, showcasing their competitive prowess despite not clinching the title.

Samuel Eto’s Resignation Rejected By Cameroun Football Federation

Samuel Eto's Resignation Rejected By Cameroun Football Federation

Former African Player of the Year, Samuel Eto’o, encountered resistance in his attempt to resign as president of the Cameroun Football Federation. The federation’s executive committee declined his resignation during a meeting in Yaoundé, where they were assessing the national team’s performance at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Samuel Eto’s Resignation -Reaction from Cameroun Football Federation

Samuel Eto’o tendered his resignation as President of the Cameroon Football Association, however, it was unanimously rejected by the members of the Executive Committee.

Eto’o, a four-time African Player of the Year awardee, has been entangled in controversies involving allegations of misconduct, match-fixing, and corruption. In the meeting, Eto’o voluntarily proposed stepping down, urging other members to follow suit “in good faith.”

After deliberations, the executive committee unanimously decided to maintain their current mandates. They expressed renewed confidence in Eto’o’s leadership, endorsing his plan for the reconstruction and development of Cameroun football, which had been adopted by the elective general assembly on December 11, 2021, the date Eto’o assumed the presidency.

While the federation’s statement didn’t specify further decisions, uncertainties hover over the future of Cameroun coach Rigobert Song following the team’s underwhelming performance at the Africa Cup. Despite being a five-time champion, Cameroun faced elimination by Nigeria in the round of 16 after narrowly progressing to the knockout stage.

Samuel Eto’s Resignation was turned down even though he has faced corruption allegations, including match-fixing, abuse of power, and other misconduct.

Ongoing investigations by FIFA’s ethics committee and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) presume Eto’o innocent until proven otherwise.

Adding to the scrutiny, Eto’o’s ambassadorial role with a sports betting company has raised concerns about potential violations of institutional codes, leading to complaints from clubs.

Cameroun football has grappled with challenges, including government interference, corruption allegations, and broken promises. Eto’o, who represented Cameroon in four World Cups from 1998 to 2014, assumed the presidency with hopes for reform and progress in the sport.

Kylian Mbappe To Real Madrid Hits Stumbling Block

Kylian Mbappe To Real Madrid Hits Stumbling Block

Real Madrid’s pursuit of Kylian Mbappe faces a stumbling block in the ongoing negotiations over the player’s wage package. Despite an expectation at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) that the 25-year-old will make the move to the Bernabeu, an agreement between the Spanish club and Mbappe remains elusive.

PSG, owned by Qatar, has presented an offer to retain Mbappe, but it is reported to offer only a marginal increase from his existing deal. The club is keen for Mbappe to stay but is unwilling to yield to potential financial demands, emphasizing a shift in their strategic direction.

Mbappe, on the other hand, appears to have made the decision to seek a new chapter in his career, but the offer from Real Madrid has not met his expectations or those of his entourage. Explorations into potential transfers to Liverpool or Arsenal have been made, but neither club is willing to compromise their wage structures to secure Mbappe’s services.

This situation leaves Mbappe with limited options, somewhat reminiscent of Lionel Messi’s situation at Barcelona. Real Madrid, in its efforts to recalibrate its approach over the last half-decade, has focused on developing younger players with initially lower contracts. This strategic shift was partly influenced by previous attempts to bring in Mbappe, only to be disappointed when he opted to remain at PSG in 2022.

Kylian Mbappé was born on December 20, 1998, in Bondy, France. He rose to prominence at a young age due to his exceptional football talent.

Here are some details about him:

International Career

Mbappé made his debut for the French national team in 2017.
– He played a key role in France’s victory in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, scoring four goals in the tournament, including one in the final against Croatia.

Known for his speed, dribbling, and clinical finishing, he is often compared to legendary players like Thierry Henry.

Nigeria vs Angola Prediction and Preview: AFCON 2023 Quarterfinal

It is AFCON 2023 Quarterfinal Day 1. Let us take a look at the Nigeria vs Angola Prediction and Preview.

Nigeria vs Angola: Pre-Match Facts Prediction and Preview

  • Nigeria are the new favourites to win AFCON 2023 with the Opta supercomputer, while they are given a 55.5% chance of winning this tie inside 90 minutes.
  • This will be the first-ever encounter between Nigeria and Angola at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
  • Nigeria and Angola last met in January 2018 at the African Nations Championship – a competition in which only players from each country’s domestic league can compete – with the Super Eagles winning 2-1 after extra time in the quarter-final.
  • Angola’s last victory against Nigeria was a World Cup qualifier in June 2004, which ended 1-0 thanks to the winning goal by Angola’s all-time top goalscorer Akwa.
  • Nigeria are playing in their 11th quarter-final match at the Africa Cup of Nations – no team has ever played in more games at this stage of the competition (Ghana, Ivory Coast and Tunisia also 11).
  • Nigeria have won their last three AFCON games without conceding, they’ve never won four consecutive matches in a single edition without conceding a goal.
  • Angola have won their last three matches at the Africa Cup of Nations – a fourth victory at AFCON 2023 would see them equal their total number of wins across all eight of their previous tournament appearances combined (P26 W4 D12 L10).
  • Angola have won their last two AFCON matches without conceding, they’ve never previously kept three consecutive clean sheets in the competition.
  • Following his second brace at AFCON 2023 – against Namibia last time out – Gelson Dala is the joint-top goal scorer (4) for Angola in a single edition of the tournament, along with Manucho (four goals in 2008).
  • If Dala scores a fifth goal at AFCON 2023 (joining top scorer Emilio Nsue), two players will have scored five or more goals in consecutive AFCON tournaments, after Karl Toko Ekambi (5) and Vincent Aboubakar (8) for Cameroon at AFCON 2021 – more than the number of players (3) that scored as many as five goals in the previous 10 editions between 2002 and 2019 (Samuel Eto’o in 2006 and 2008, Gedo in 2010 and Odion Ighalo in 2019, all five goals).
  • Ademola Lookman scored his first-ever Africa Cup of Nations goals (2) against Cameroon in the last 16. He could become the fourth Nigerian to score three or more goals in the knockout rounds of a single AFCON edition, after Ighalo in 2019 (4), Jay-Jay Okocha in 2004 (3) and Rashidi Yekini in 1994 (3).

Nigeria vs Angola Prediction: AFCON 2023 Quarterfinal: Match Preview

Nigeria now carry the pressure of being favourites to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations following the exit of many of the continents’ big guns before the quarter-final stage.

Ranked 42nd in the current FIFA Rankings, Nigeria are the highest-ranked side left in the competition following the exit of Morocco (13th), reigning champions Senegal (20th), Tunisia (28th), Algeria (30th) and Egypt (33rd). In comparison, Angola are the lowest-ranked team (117th) left at AFCON 2023 and will be out to cause one of the biggest shocks in recent memory at the tournament.

After a decent point to open AFCON 2023 against Algeria (1-1), Angola have now built up a three-game winning run at the tournament with victories over Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Namibia, but this tie with Nigeria is by far their biggest test yet.

Forward Gelson Dala has been in fine form, scoring four goals overall including a brace in the last-16 win over Namibia. Another goal for Dala in this match would ensure a piece of history, as he’d become the first Angolan to score as many as five goals at a single edition of the Africa Cup of Nations. Dala is also their most creative player, having created more than double the number of open-play chances of any other Angolan at the tournament (8), and he also has the highest expected assists total (0.47) in the squad.

Gelson Dala AFCON

They’ll have to keep out a Nigerian attack that is stacked with talent, though. No Nigerian striker is better known than Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, who’s both attempted the most shots (15) and has the highest non-penalty expected goals total (2.78) at this tournament. Those chances have produced just one goal so far, however, with Ademola Lookman the hero against Cameroon in the round of 16. The Atalanta forward scored both of their goals in the 2-0 win – his first-ever AFCON goals for Nigeria.

This should be an interesting tie for the neutral, with both teams happy to concede possession and play on the counter-attack so far at AFCON 2023. Both Nigeria (45.0%) and Angola (44.0%) have averaged less possession than their opponents, while both feature in the top four teams for shots from counter-attacks – Angola are level with South Africa on five, with Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea following on four.

AFCON 2023 Quarterfinal: Nigeria vs Angola Head-to-Head

Given that this is Nigeria’s 102nd match at an AFCON, it may come as a surprise to some that this will be the first time that they have met Angola at the tournament. Angola are relatively inexperienced compared to the Nigerians, with only 30 previous AFCON games under their belt, while this is just their third quarter-final appearance at the finals after defeats to Egypt in 2008 and Ghana in 2010.

Conversely, Nigeria are playing in a record 11th quarter-final tie at the Africa Cup of Nations – a tally level with Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire and Tunisia, who were unable to add to their totals in this tournament.

Angola’s last victory against Nigeria was a World Cup qualifier in June 2004, which ended 1-0 thanks to a goal from Angola’s all-time top-goal scorer Akwa.

Nigeria vs Angola Prediction

Nigeria vs Angola Prediction

Nigeria are predicted to advance to the semi-finals with a win over Angola in this AFCON quarter-final tie on Friday. Across 10,000 pre-match simulations by the Opta supercomputer, Nigeria won the tie inside 90 minutes 55.5% of the time with Angola winning under a quarter of them (22.6%). Extra time was needed in 21.9% of simulations, which also opens up the possibility of a penalty shootout.

Following the exit of pre-tournament AFCON favourites Senegal, Nigeria are now given the highest chance of winning the title, while Angola are outsiders among the final eight teams. Here are the current tournament projections for both Nigeria and Angola by the Opta supercomputer as things stand:

Ghanaian sports journalists to demonstrate against GFA and Sports Ministry

Ghanaian sports journalists to demonstrate against GFA and Sports Ministry GFA APOLOGISES FOR BLACK STARS 2023 AFCON EXIT Just In: Kurt Okraku Re-elected As GFA President

Ghanaian sports journalists have obtained a police permit to stage a nationwide demonstration against the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Sports Ministry.

Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has triggered these personalities.

The Black Stars’ campaign at AFCON 2023 ended prematurely after a series of lackluster performances, including a crucial defeat to Cape Verde in the opening match. Despite initial leads in subsequent games against Egypt and Mozambique, defensive lapses led to crucial equalizers, ultimately resulting in Ghana’s untimely elimination with only two points.

Notable figures among the journalists spearheading this demonstration include Saddick Adams, widely known as ‘Sports Obama’. Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly referred to as ‘Countryman Songo’ alongside Veronica Commey are all involved. Nana Yaw Kesse, Odiahenkan, and others have also rallied behind the cause.

READ: Halt GFA’s search for a new Black Stars coach, demand for AFCON managment and expenditure report: Sports Journalist Saddick Adams to Akufo Addo

The planned demonstration, scheduled for February 14, 2024, aims to hold accountable the authorities. The GFA and the Sports Ministry are being queried for the disappointing performance of the national teams in recent tournaments.

The journalists assert that urgent measures need to be taken to ensure improved performances in major competitions.

READ: GFA FINALLY APOLOGISES FOR BLACK STARS EARLY EXIT AT 2023 AFCON

In addition to their demand for accountability, the journalists are calling for the immediate dissolution of the Committee set up by the GFA to appoint a new coach. They argue that the decision to form a new coaching team is premature and that a comprehensive assessment should be conducted in the aftermath of the team’s dismal showing.

Ghanaians, football enthusiasts, and concerned citizens are expected to join the demonstration in solidarity with the sports journalists. The collective advocacy is for positive changes within the Ghanaian football landscape according to them

The protest is anticipated to be a pivotal moment in the ongoing discourse surrounding the nation’s football administration and performance on the international stage.

AFCON CURSE? No Champion Makes Quarterfinals in 7 Tournaments: Facts

AFCON CURSE? No Champion Makes Quarterfinals in 7 Tournaments! Senegal vs Ivory Coast: AFCON 2023 Head-to-Head, Prediction and Facts

Do you know that no AFCON winner has qualified for the quarterfinals in the seven (7) tournaments?

That may sound strange, but it is the reality. What this means is that since 2012, all winners of the AFCON have not been able to defend the trophy well enough, let alone bypass the round of 16. It also means that, since 2010, no defending champion of the AFCON has won the trophy back-to-back.

Details and Date to Prove That No AFCON Winner Has Qualified for the Quarterfinals in the 7 Tournaments

During the 2012 tournament, Egypt, who were the defending champions, did not qualify for the tournament at all.

In 2013, Zambia, which won the trophy for the first time, was eliminated from the tournament at the group stage.

In 2013, Nigeria won the AFCON, but they did not even qualify for the tournament to get the chance of being kicked out in the group stage. Ivory Coast won that competition.

However, the elimination of previous winners continued as Ivory Coast were eliminated in the 2017 tournament, and their quest to defend the title was dashed in the group stage of the competition.

In the 2017 AFCON, Cameroon were the champions of Africa once again; however, they were eliminated in the attempt to defend the title during the 2019 tournament. Cameroon was sent parking home in the round of 16.

The year, Algeria silenced the entire continent with great football and tenacity to win the trophy and enjoy the bragging rights that come with being champions, but just like their predecessor champions, their faith was determined as they were kicked out of the tournament in the round of 16. In 2021, Algeria was eliminated in the group stages.

No one anticipated or ever dreamed that Ivory Coast had what it takes to kill a big giant like Senegal, who is Africa’s number one team and was among the favourites to win the trophy.

READ: 2023 AFCON Quarterfinal Fixtures, Dates and Predictions

At the current 2023 AFCON underway in Ivory Coast, the host country managed to secure a sweet and well-fought four-goal victory in the round of 16 to knock out Senegal, the defeating champions, on a 5-4 penalty shootout after a 1-1 drawn game after extra time.

Whichever team lays a hand on the AFCON 2023 trophy must begin to plan and work super hard to break the 12-year trend or join the other defending champions who never went past the round of 16 in the next AFCON after they have won.

2023 AFCON Quarterfinal Fixtures and Predictions

Friday, February 2:

  • Nigeria vs Angola: Nigeria is historically a stronger team and has performed well throughout the tournament. However, Angola’s impressive display against Namibia shows they shouldn’t be underestimated. Home advantage for Angola might also be a factor. Prediction: Nigeria has a slight edge, but it could be a close match.
  • DR Congo vs Guinea: Both teams come from dramatic victories in the round of 16. DR Congo’s experience might be slightly more advantageous, but Guinea’s fighting spirit shouldn’t be ignored. Prediction: This is a tough call, but DR Congo might have a narrow advantage.

Saturday, February 3:

  • Mali vs Ivory Coast: This is a highly anticipated match between two strong contenders. Ivory Coast has the home advantage and momentum after their penalty shootout win against Senegal. However, Mali shouldn’t be counted out, especially after their convincing victory over Burkina Faso. Prediction: This match is too close to call definitively. Both teams have strong arguments, and it could go either way.
  • Cape Verde vs South Africa: Cape Verde has been a surprise package in the tournament, showcasing strong defensive play. South Africa has also been consistent and defensively sound. This could be a low-scoring and tight match. Prediction: Similar to the previous match, this is difficult to predict. Cape Verde’s defensive strategy might edge them slightly ahead.
