2025 BECE starts Wednesday June 11

2025 BECE starts Wednesday June 11

The 2025 BECE starts Wednesday, June 11, per the latest date announced by the Ghana Education Service (GES) in collaboration with the West African Examination Council (WAEC). Prior to this final announcement, the examination was scheduled for 9th-16th June. The new timetable has been welcomed by many schools, teachers and parents, as it will add two days of rest and revision for candidates. The revision will help students prepare even more for the almighty Mathematics paper to be written right after the break.

What is the reason for changing the BECE starting date?

However, as a result of the tentative date for the 2025 Eid-ul-Adha, the new date was confirmed and released by the GES via a letter addressed to all regional directors of education, schools and stakeholders.

What are the subjects to be written each morning and afternoon during the BECE this year?

Per the new timetable released along with the announcement,  the examination timetable looks like this.

On Wednesday, 11th June, 2025, candidates will write the Social Studies and Computing subjects.

On Thursday, 12th June, 2025, the paper to be administered to the 2025 BECE candidates will be English Language and Career Technology.

Integrated Science (Science) and Ghanaian Language will be written on Friday, 13th June, 2025.

The examination will then break for the weekend. It will offer students the needed rest and more revision time for the remaining four (4) subjects.

On Monday, the 16th of June, 2025, Mathematics and Religious and Moral Education will be administered by WAEC. Candidates must do well in these subjects because of the two days break they enjoyed and used as additional revision periods.

The last two papers to be written by most candidates will take place on 17th June 2025 and these are French and Creative Arts and Design.

However, the examination will end on Wednesday for students who will be writing Arabic on 18th June, 2025.

Below is a simplified timetable for the 2025 BECE as released by GES and WAEC.

New 2025 BECE date and timetable

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the release of a new and final 2025 BECE examination date and timetable for candidates by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). Per the new timetable, the examination will start on a Wednesday instead of the usual Monday and end on a Wednesday in the following week.

What are the final 2025 BECE start and end dates released by GES?

Per the timetable released earlier by WAEC in collaboration with the GES, the examination was to start on Monday, 9th June, and end on Monday, 16th June. However, due to the Eid-ul-Adha festivities and holiday, the examination will now start on Wednesday, 11th June, and end on Wednesday, 18th June, 2025. This will be the first time in the history of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) that the examination will start on a Wednesday (mid-week).

Teachers, schools and candidates are to note that the subject pairings as released by WAEC earlier remain the same.

In a letter released by the Ghana Education Service to communicate the change of the examination date and timetable, it indicated that the change in the examination date was necessitated by the tentative date for Eid-ul-Adha, which is Saturday, 7th June 2025. It added that “following on from the Eid-ul-Adha holidays, it is envisaged that Monday, 9th, and Tuesday, 10th June, could be declared as public holidays.”

The new dates were therefore considered to ensure the examination does not coincide with the holidays.

The new dates will help candidates in the long run since they will have a break after taking subjects from 11th to 13th June, then break for the weekend, revise well for the examination, and continue from Monday, 16th June, to Wednesday, 18th June, 2025.

The new WAEC timetable has also been attached to help students and all other stakeholders be fully updated about the changes.
