The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has retained Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, the former Education Minister, has joined with former President John Dramani Mahama in the 2020 election.
Apart from Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, who appeared to be the favourite candidate for the running mate position, names such as former Chief of Staff to President Mahama, Julius Debrah; an economist, Dr Nii Moi Thompson; Member of Parliament for Asunafo, Eric Opoku; and retired Police Commissioner, Nathan Kofi Boakye, were rumoured to be among Mr Mahama’s options.
On February 27, 2024, the NDC leader officially nominated his running mate to the party’s Council of Elders.
Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party’s General Secretary, published and signed a statement explaining that the nomination process followed Article 45 of the NDC Constitution.
Mr. Kwetey also stated that a meeting with the party’s Council of Elders is scheduled for Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 11 a.m., to discuss the nomination.
In addition, the National Executive Committee will meet at 3 p.m. on the same day to further discuss the nomination.
He emphasised that any additional information on the meetings will be swiftly communicated to all parties involved.
Mr. Kwetey expressed confidence in his selected running partner, saying, “The NDC is confident that the Running Mate will bring a wealth of experience, expertise, and dedication to our campaign.”
He stated that selecting a running mate would be consistent with John Mahama’s goal of “Building the Ghana We Want Together.”
Mr. Kwetey emphasised the party’s resolve to working relentlessly for good development and progress in the country.
