Here is what EduWatch says about Bawumia’s Free tertiary scholarships for PWDs

Here is what EduWatch says about Bawumia’s Free tertiary scholarships for PWDs

Africa Education Watch (EduWatch), a prominent educational advocacy group, has responded to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent promise to offer free tertiary scholarships to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

Dr. Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party and Vice-President of Ghana, made this pledge during an engagement with the clergy in Sefwi-Wiawso, Western North Region.

This announcement is part of a broader agenda aimed at enhancing the support system for PWDs, which he plans to implement should he be elected in the 2024 presidential election.

In his speech, Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the proposed scholarships would cover both tuition and accommodation for PWDs who gain admission to universities.

He plans to allocate funds from the Scholarship Secretariat and GETFUND specifically for this initiative.

This approach, according to him, is to ensure that higher education becomes entirely accessible to PWDs, helping to level the playing field and fostering an inclusive educational environment.

Moreover, Dr. Bawumia, who also serves as the Patron of Lepers Aid Ghana, emphasized his ongoing commitment to supporting the vulnerable.

His track record includes numerous initiatives aimed at assisting marginalized groups, reinforcing his promise to prioritize broader and more effective support for PWDs under his administration.

While EduWatch commends this initiative as a positive development, the organization points out a significant hurdle that could undermine the effectiveness of such a program: the persistent issue of graduate unemployment among PWDs.

According to EduWatch’s Executive Director, Kofi Asare, who expressed his concerns via a social media post, many PWDs remain unemployed years after completing their tertiary education.

The main challenges they face include the reluctance of employers to modify workplace facilities to accommodate their needs and concerns over assumed lower productivity.

This situation is exacerbated by the lack of equitable employment practices in both the public and private sectors.

The public sector, expected to lead by example, falls short in implementing inclusive hiring policies, and the private sector, lacking incentives, often does not consider employing PWDs a viable option.

EduWatch argues that while providing free tertiary education to PWDs is a commendable step, it must be complemented by robust employment policies.

The organization stresses the necessity for an effective equitable employment policy that not only facilitates but also ensures the integration of PWDs into the workforce.

Such policies should include incentives for businesses to hire PWDs and invest in necessary workplace adaptations.

Additionally, EduWatch suggests the creation of employment pathways that are specifically designed for PWDs, to help integrate this often-overlooked demographic into various professional fields.

Without these measures, the well-intended educational benefits could fail to translate into economic prosperity for PWDs.

To truly empower PWDs, EduWatch calls for a holistic approach that encompasses education, employment, and social integration.

The organization urges all political parties to consider these factors seriously and to incorporate them into their agendas.

By doing so, they can ensure that the educational initiatives launched for PWDs lead to tangible improvements in their quality of life and allow them to contribute effectively to society.

In conclusion, while Dr. Bawumia’s initiative marks a significant step forward in addressing the educational needs of PWDs, it also casts a spotlight on the broader challenges that need addressing.

This holistic approach will not only uplift individuals with disabilities but will also enrich the societal fabric by making it more inclusive and equitable.

Election 2024: Any Result Other Than NPP Losing Would Be A Stolen Verdict

Election 2024: Any Result Other Than NPP Losing Would Be A Stolen Verdict

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a respected figure in Ghanaian politics and a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said that any result other than NPP losing the the 2024 election would be a stolen verdict.

He voiced his firm belief that his party stands little chance of winning the upcoming presidential elections slated for December 7, 2024. In a candid interview with JoyNews journalist Benjamin Akakpo on Thursday, March 14, 2024, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed his conviction that any outcome other than a change in government would reek of foul play and could plunge the nation into a state of turmoil.

Responding to Akakpo’s inquiry regarding the NPP’s electoral prospects, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe delivered a stark assessment, characterizing any victory for the party as a product of what he termed ‘The stolen verdict.’ He warned of dire consequences should such an outcome materialize, cautioning that it would sow seeds of discord and instability within the country.

Elaborating on his prognosis, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe attributed the NPP’s dim electoral prospects to several factors, chief among them being the prevailing economic challenges facing the nation. He asserted that disillusionment with the party’s performance in addressing these issues has eroded its support base among the electorate.

Furthermore, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe highlighted internal rifts within the NPP, particularly discord surrounding the party’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He suggested that Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy lacked unanimous endorsement within the party ranks and alleged that financial backing from incumbent President Akufo-Addo was instrumental in securing his position.

Drawing attention to regional dynamics, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed concern over fissures emerging within the NPP’s stronghold, the Ashanti Region. He pointed to the defection of former party member Alan Kyerematen to the Movement for Change as a destabilizing factor, predicting a splintering of support that could undermine the party’s electoral prospects.

In conclusion, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe painted a sobering picture of the NPP’s electoral outlook, emphasizing the imperative for introspection and reform within the party if it hopes to remain viable in Ghana’s political landscape. His candid assessment serves as a clarion call for party members and leadership alike to confront internal challenges and present a united front ahead of the impending elections.

Dame provides ‘evidence’ of GH¢14 trillion saved by Akufo-Addo ’s Government

Dame GH¢14 TRILLION Akufo-Addo

Godfred Dame has provided an evidence to support Akufo-Addo ‘s claim of saving 14 trillion in his Tenure. During President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2024, he announced that the Office of the Attorney General had forestalled judgment debts amounting to an astonishing GH¢10 trillion. However, in a subsequent interview with JoyNews on February 29, 2024, Dame clarified and significantly expanded on this figure, asserting that the government has, in reality, averted payment of judgment debts totaling over GH¢14 trillion.

This clarification not only highlights the magnitude of financial liabilities that the country has been shielded from but also underscores the government’s commitment to prudent fiscal management and legal stewardship. According to Dame, the previously cited figure of GH¢10 trillion pertained to a single case alone, suggesting the broader and more complex legal landscape in which the Attorney General’s office has been navigating to safeguard national finances.

Delving into specifics, Dame offered a breakdown of some of the notable instances where his office has successfully defended the state against significant financial claims. Among these, he cited the case involving China Jlen, where the Supreme Court’s intervention led to the setting aside of a judgment debt amounting to GH¢352,662,144.41. Additionally, he mentioned the aversion of a potential payout nearing $1 billion ($988,294,313), underscoring the vast sums at stake and the critical role of his office in preventing these outflows.

The Attorney General’s revelations have sparked a conversation about the effectiveness of Ghana’s legal defenses against judgment debts, which often stem from contractual disputes or litigation losses and can place a hefty strain on the country’s budget. Dame ‘s assertion that such savings would not have been possible under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government further politicizes the issue, suggesting a comparison of administrative efficiencies between the current and former governments in handling legal challenges that have fiscal implications.

The enormity of the amounts saved, as claimed by the Attorney General (Dame), invites scrutiny and discussion about the mechanisms through which these savings were achieved. It also raises questions about the processes for assessing and managing legal risks that could lead to judgment debts, the transparency of these processes, and the overall governance framework within which such significant financial risks are navigated.

As the details of these cases and the strategies employed by the Attorney General’s office come to light, the Ghanaian public and stakeholders await a deeper understanding of how these unprecedented savings were realized, and what lessons can be drawn to avert future liabilities of a similar magnitude.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu removed as Majority Leader

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has removed the MP for Suame Constituency, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, as the majority leader of Parliament. The party has made other significant changes in the leadership of the Majority Caucus in Parliament, as part of its preparations for the forthcoming December elections.

According to reliable sources, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for Effutu, is slated to replace Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as the Majority Leader.

Moreover, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the incumbent Majority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, will be elevated to the role of Deputy Majority Leader. Consequently, Habib Iddrisu, the current First Deputy Whip, will ascend to the position of Majority Chief Whip.

Additionally, Patricia Appiagyei, representing the constituency of Asokwa, is anticipated to assume the role of First Deputy Whip, filling the void left by Lydia Seyram Alhassan, who has been nominated as Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation. Sources further suggest that Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, MP for Sefwi-Akontombra, is likely to be appointed as the Second Deputy Whip.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Suame MP who also serves as Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, is speculated to chair the NPP’s 2024 Manifesto Committee, as per insider information.

These adjustments within the leadership of the Majority Caucus will be formalized during a meeting of the NPP’s National Council scheduled for Monday. This decision comes in the wake of President Akuffo-Addo’s Ministerial Reshuffle announcement last week, coinciding with Valentine’s Day.

With the December elections looming, these leadership changes are aimed at fortifying and consolidating the NPP’s majority presence in Parliament.

Osei Kyei Mensah is a member of the New Patriotic Party. He first became a member of the Parliament in January 1997, representing the people of Old Tafo, in the Suame Constituency of the Ashanti Region. He has kept his seat since then, representing his constituency in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Parliaments of the 4th Republic of Ghana. He is the chairperson for the Special Budget, House, and Business Committees. He is also a member of the Finance, Mines and Energy Standing Orders and Selection Committees. He criticized the Speaker of the Ghanaian Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for suspending parliamentary proceedings to attend the 2023 National Development Conference hosted by the Church of Pentecost

Ministerial Reshuffle Came Too Late But… – Freddie Blay

Ministerial reshuffle came too late but… – Freddie Blay

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has said that Akufo Addo’s ministerial reshuffle came late. He said that Akufo Addo should have conducted this exercise two years ago.

In an interview with Accra-based Starr FM, Blay expressed his belief that the reshuffle should have been implemented sooner, ideally around two years prior. He underscored the importance of timely changes to bring about the necessary impact and transformation within the government.

Despite his preference for an earlier reshuffle, Blay acknowledged the President’s authority and responsibility in making such decisions. He recognized that circumstances may have evolved since his initial expectation for the reshuffle, but maintained his view that the current timing appeared less conducive to effecting meaningful changes in the government’s composition.

“I would’ve wished it had come earlier. Maybe two years ago but better late than never” he said.

Blay’s remarks came amidst a backdrop of increasing calls for a reshuffle within the NPP administration. Despite facing criticism and pressure for changes in his cabinet, President Akufo-Addo had previously defended the performance of his appointees in August 2022, indicating no immediate plans for a reshuffle.

However, the recent reshuffle brought about significant changes, with notable figures such as Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Road Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta, and Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu losing their positions. This unexpected development marked a departure from the President’s previous stance and highlighted a willingness to make substantial adjustments within the government.

In addition to the departure of key figures, the reshuffle also saw the introduction of new faces into ministerial roles and the reassignment of existing ministers and deputies. This reshuffling of positions signaled a strategic move by the government to address concerns, realign priorities, and potentially revitalize its agenda moving forward.

Opoku Onyinah addresses Bawumia’s running mate speculation

Opoku Onyinah addresses Bawumia’s running mate speculation

Former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Prof. Opoku Onyinah, has responded to speculation surrounding his potential selection as the running mate to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Prof. Onyinah has emerged as a prominent candidate for the role of running mate to Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming December 7 election.

The distinguished religious figure sparked further speculation with a Facebook post on Sunday, which many interpreted as a tacit confirmation of the rumors.

In light of the diverse reactions to his post, Prof. Onyinah clarified in a subsequent message that the initial post was unrelated to ongoing speculations. He explained that the message was inspired by the Church of Pentecost’s 2015 theme and contained valuable lessons.

Very interesting. I coined my last post when we (The Church of Pentecost) adopted the theme, “Being a Good Steward of God in my Generation” in 2015. I examined the man who received one talent and hid it in the ground. I then wrote, “The Lord has a reason for creating me. Burying my talent and making it redundant is doing a disservice to my family, church, nation, and world. If I fail to speak, to work, to contribute, I allow the ‘bad’ minority to rule and dictate. Often, the silence of the majority or a good one helps the noisy minority destroy society or even rule.” It has many lessons. Last night, I was looking for a quote that touched my heart on preaching to post it. As I could not find it and stumbled on this, I posted it. It has nothing to do with what is going on. Perhaps it has come at the wrong time. Timing is important. I still “keep my head” and place Christ first in whatever I do,” he wrote.

Since Vice President Bawumia’s selection as the NPP flagbearer on November 4, 2023, several names have been circulating as potential running mates.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, has been rumored as a leading contender.

Other individuals such as John Ampontuah Kumah, Deputy Finance Minister and MP for Ejisu in Ashanti, and Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Deputy Minister of Education, have also been mentioned.

Additionally, figures like the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (Minister of Education), Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Majority Leader), and Ursula Owusu-Ekuful are reportedly under consideration for the position.

Professor Gyampo’s Preliminary Take On Bawumia’s Presentation

Professor Gyampo's Preliminary Take On Bawumia's Presentation

Professor Ransford Gyampo has reacted to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent presentation at UPSA Auditorium. This is what he has to say;

1. This essentially was an articulation of achievements and vision, fundamentally in the broader area of Digitization and honestly, the various manifestations of this overarching policy, and what it can do to promote development, is indubitable and enormous. No doubt it formed the interwoven central theme of the presentation.

2. Unfortunately, Ghanaians had to wait to be told more about what digitization has done for them by the man himself, in a manner that makes many of the achievements that should have been long known, sound new. Consequently, there may be the need to fact-check many of the claims in order to be sure.

3. It appears DMB is the only one who has a firm grasp over the policy, as the party itself has either been ignorant about the claims about Digitization or has been incompetent in communicating its achievements to fester in the psyche of Ghanaians. Unless the party begins to undertake remedial tutorials about Digitization and its achievements for the purposes of political communication, the work will be difficult for DMB.

4. Despite what it can do, Digitization is not the sine qua non to development. Other key interventions such as good governance and deliberate efforts to seal the leakages and slippages, fight corruption, exemplary leadership that first tightens its belt, rather than living bourgeoisie, etc should have been emphasized more than being treated nearly as appendages.

5. Parts of the presentation was an indictment on the government of which he is part, in a manner that raises serious questions and vindicates those of us who have been critics of the government. Promising to have not more than 50 Ministers when you are part of a government of over 100 Ministers; and promising to abolish some taxes like the Emissions tax, Gaming Tax, E-Levy, VAT on electricity consumption, etc makes some of us feel vindicated for criticizing and calling for downsizing of government and the abolition of such nuisance taxes.

DMB’s supporters came after us for such criticisms and I am wondering whether they will go after him, now that he’s taken a position that responds favorably to our criticisms on the size of government and nuisance taxes.

6. But the more important question is, why do these great interventions tomorrow, instead of today that they are greatly needed? Does the answer still lie in the claim that he’s not the one in charge? Well, in that case, then karma is not good at all. There was then absolutely no basis for the 170 questions posed to Veep Amissah-Arthur because he was also a mate and wasn’t in charge.

7. DMB still blames our challenges on COVID and the Russian-Ukraine war and there is no doubt at all that these have had negative effects on many countries including Ghana. But a more convincing explanation could have also focused on an admission of what was done wrong domestically, and a promise to refrain from our own contributions to the challenges. It cannot be entirely accurate for us to blame all other than ourselves for our challenges.

8. Finally, there were great ideas that were espoused including the need for a national development plan, a move that was initiated by the predecessor government but was jettisoned. All the other contenders in the 2024 elections also have great plans. But it appears great plans wouldn’t really matter.

Available empirical survey reports show that many Ghanaians now, do not believe in political promises, as many of them are merely vote garnering gimmicks. What would therefore be the decider in the 2024 elections, would be a side by side comparison of the trustworthiness, credibility and achievements of the various contenders.

In my next post, I will now offer a sharper focus and properly interrogate some of the policy vision outlined. Where they deserve commendations, we would commend and where they must be fact-checked and critiqued, we will do so.

NPP Vice Chairman Resigns; Here’s Why

NPP Vice Chairman Resigns

Foster Oteng, the Second Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Abirem Constituency, has recently resigned from his role, marking a notable development within the party. This decision, outlined in an official letter dated January 29, 2024, is attributed to personal reasons as cited by Oteng.

In his resignation letter, Oteng took the opportunity to express his appreciation for the experiences and insights he gained during his tenure. The departure of Foster Oteng holds significance for the NPP’s Abirem Constituency, indicating a shift in the party’s leadership dynamics within that particular region.

“I write to officially tender in my resignation as the constituency 2nd Vice Chairman of our party effective immediately. After much reflection and consideration, I have come to this difficult decision to resign from my position as a constituency executive due to one or two personal reasons.

I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences I have gained during my time with the party at the constituency level. I would like to thank all the constituency executives, electoral area coordinators, polling executives and party faithful for the support and guidance provided me during my tenure. I am appreciative of the relationships I have built and the knowledge I have acquired. I wish to state however that I am still a true member of our great party.

I wish the constituency executives a continued success in their future endeavours and I hope that my decision is received with understanding.” he wrote

The NPP will be joining other political parties in the December 7 General Election. This will be a big blow for the party. This is because, in times like this, the party needs all hands on both to win.

I Will Bring Alan Kyeremanten Back To The NPP If Elected As Flagbearer – Kennedy Agyapong

I Will Bring Alan Kyeremanten Back To The NPP If Elected As Flagbearer - Kennedy Agyapong

NPP Flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has promised that he will bring Alan Kyeremanten back to the NPP if elected as the flagbearer of the party on November 4.

Speaking to delegates in Cape Coast on Saturday, 28th October, 2023, Kennedy Agyapong stated that the NPP needs the support of Alan Kyeremanten to win in 2024. He believes that he is in the best position to convince Alan Kyeremanten to join the NPP again.

Alan Kyeremanten resigned from the New Patriotic Party while addressing the media at Movenpick Hotel in September, 2023. He announced that he will be contesting the 2024 General Elections as an Independent Candidate

Before his resignation, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen withdrew from the Flagbearership Race of the New Patriotic Party. According to many, it was a sign of his resignation from the NPP.

“In light of the foregoing, I wish to confirm that I am honourably withdrawing from the process that will lead to the Presidential Primaries to be held on the 4th of November 2023. In the next upcoming weeks, I will provide an indication of the role that I will play in politics in Ghana, after consultations with my family and other well-wishers, various stakeholders, and interest groups,” he added.

Mr. Kyerematen who placed third in the party’s August 26 special delegates conference said he opted out of the race following the intimidation of agents.

He also said the race seems to be deliberately skewed to favour one of the candidates.

“The level of intimidation of varying intensity, directly and indirectly, unleashed on a significant number of Delegates at various Voting Centers across the sixteen regions, is unprecedented in the history of our Party.”

Alan Kyeremanten’s run as an Independent Candidate is going to make it difficult to the NPP in the Ashanti region which remains its world bank in terms of votes.

“In addition, the fact that my Polling Agent in the North East region has suffered severe damage to his eyesight, arising from his bold and courageous effort to ensure compliance with the very rules and regulations for the conduct of the elections as approved by the Presidential Elections Committee, will forever remain a dark spot in the history of internal elections within the Party.” Alan said.

I Will Bring Alan Back To NPP – Kennedy Agyapong Speaks.

I Will Bring Alan Back To NPP - Kennedy Agyapong Speaks.

I will bring Alan Back to NPP; this is the current trending message from Honorable Kennedy Agyapong to all delegates. It is about two weeks for the New Patriotic Party NPP to have their primaries. This election will take place on the 4th of November 2024. The presidential aspirants and parliamentary aspirants in the New Patriotic Party NPP are working assiduously to win the race on the 4th of November 2024.

Following the results of the super delegates elections organized by the New Patriotic Party NPP about a month ago, Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng placed third after His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the Vice President of Ghana and Honorable Kennedy Agyapong,  member of parliament for the good people of Assin Central; the former minister in Charge of Trade and Industries under the leadership of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo withdraw from the competition. After two weeks, Honorable Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng set up his own movement as the presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections. Alan Kwadeo Kyeremanteng chose the butterfly as his movement logo; that is the logo for Movement for Change.

Many people are of the view that the withdrawal of Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng from the New Patriotic Party NPP will affect the party negatively in terms of vote in the 2024 general elections.  Speaking to the delegate in Tamale ahead of the NPP’s primaries, Honorable Kennedy Agyapong assured all supporters and fans of Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng to give him their votes. Kennedy Agyapong is of the view that he will be able to bring Alan Kyeremanteng back to the New Patriotic Party NPP because he (Kennedy Agyapong) simply stands for unity and peace and on that basis, he will be able to unify the party again to include Alan Kwadwo Kyeremateng. Alan Kyeremanteng is one of the founding fathers of the New Patriotic Party. His exit from the party was a big blow to some of the great politicians and leaders of the New Patriotic Party. Some are hoping and wishing to have the Honorable Alan Kyeremateng back to the New Patriotic Party NPP.
